- Aim: To use the advisor tool and understand the different options available in order to perform the simulation.
- Objective:
- To give different inputs and been changed to understand the change in the output.
- To perform the simulation in order to see whether the vehicle meets the requirement or some modifications are need to be done like changing the battery capacity.
- Performing the simulation and get the output whether the vehicle meets the gradeability requirement.
- Method:
1. For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.
- For question 1, the model is run for 1 cycle where the distance traveled was 11km.
- For further test, the cycle is run for 3,5, even 7 number of cycles still the maximum distance the vehicle traveled was 25.7 mile which is 41.36km.
- Thus it can be concluded that the vehicle can travel the maximum distance of 41.36km
As per the requirement, the mass has been changed to 500kg. |
Selection of FTP cycle for the further run. |
Distance covered by the vehicle when run for 7 numbers cycles. It can be seen that after a certain number of cycle vehicle won't above a certain distance. |
2. In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.
- After understanding that the vehicle cannot run for a distance of 45km on the default setting and battery capacity, it is necessary to increase the battery capacity in order to make sure the vehicle run the minimum distance of 45km.
- The default battery used was ESS_PB25, which is not sufficient to run the vehicle so in order to make sure the vehicle runs a minimum distance of 45 the capacity has been increased to ESS_PB85.
Battery capacity has been changed. |
The distance traveled is 33.1 miles which is 53.29km. |
3. Perform gradability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file.
- In order to compare the results both the time and speed have been changed and the observations are taken.
- It can be seen that the gradeability increases if the vehicle is given more time to climb the hill. Like in the simulation, the gradeability for 55mph initially was 8.9% but the same increases if the time is increased from 10 sec to 20 sec. Then in that case the gradeability increases from 8.9 to 11.5%.
- The same test has been taken when speed is changed from 55 to 65mph. For speed of 65mph and time of 10sec, the gradeability was 7.2% but when the time increases the gradeability increases to 9.5%.
- The results are shown below.
Speed 55mph time 10sec |
Speed 55mph time 20sec |
Speed 65mph time 10sec |
Speed 65mph time 20sec |
- 4. Learning outcome:
- To use the advisor tool and understand the basics of the tool.
- To learn how the default values can be changed and what are the effects of these values on the gradeability of the vehicle.
- 5. Conclusion:
- In order to improve the distance covered by the vehicle it is necessary to increase the battery capacity of the vehicle.
- Also As the time available for the vehicle to climb the stiff the gradeability of the vehicle increases.
