AIM:
To do analysis on the two gears with three different materials and compare their results with the help of ANSYS structural analysis.
Procedure:
1. Open ANSYS structural analysis and create three types of materials and assign properties to those materials.
2. Now import the geomentry of gears to the ansys and update the geomentry before going to the model.
3. Now create a contact for gear and select the augumented lagragian formulation which helps to rotate the gears without having too much interface. Select all 26 faces of the left and right side gears.
4. Now create a joint for each gear as a rotational joint by slecting the model of each gear.
5. After that go to mesh and mesh the models with the 1mm fine meshing size.
6. Now go to the analysis settings and give the intial time step and end time step and also mention the number of steps.
7. To specify the motion for each create joint rotation for the left gear and joint moment for the right gear and assign the values for rotation and moment.
8. Now go to the solution and extract the total deformation, strain and stress and then solve the problem.
Results & Discussion:
1. For the material cast iron model the maximum stress and strain are 315.14MPa and 0.00386.
2.For the material cast steel model the maximum stress and strain are 320.85MPa and 0.00155.
3. For the material cast bronze model the maximum stress and strain are 325.73MPa and 0.00407.
4. From all three analysis we can onserve that cast iron has less strain and less stress when compared to cast steel and cast bronze and due to this reason itself most of the gear materials are cast iron.
Conclusion:
Thus we performed structural analysis on spur gear and compared the results between Cast Iron, Cast steel and Cast bronze and concluded that cast iron is the preferred material for gears.
