Fender Wheel Arc Challenge

Introduction:-

We are calculating the wheel arc gaps in the given design with the help of NX-cad as we have the necessary design data. Now, we have to measure different parameters to follow the European standards. So, the European standards provide a condition that the vertical distance between the tyre and the fender should be greater than or equal to A (5mm) also the horizontal distance between the tyre and fender should be greater than or equal to L (10 mm).

Concept:-

The concept behind these standards is primarily focused on pedestrian safety. Safety needs to be the primary design requirement of any car on the road that is why standards like these come into play. Firstly the Vertical distance shows the distance between the tyre and the fender tells us about the suspension tolerance of the vehicle and gives us an idea about how much tolerance the suspension has while on an uneven road the second factor, that is Horizontal distance between the wheel and the fender is kept to avoid stones flicked by the wheel in order to avoid damage to the pedestrians.

Approach:-

Firstly we created a Datum plane on the workspace of the designed part and then used different NX commands to draw the trajectory for the calculations of the Standards like Suspension Tolerance and horizontal distance between wheel and fender as you can see in the attached images.

Calculations:-

First table represents the calculation data of the Horizontal distance between Tyre and the fender

Conclusion:-

The above calculation shows that the Fender does not follow the required criterion of the European standards thus this design should be referred back to the styling team for proper modification So that the design should follow the standards.
