Week 8 - Challenge 1 - Base Bracket Design

Base Bracket Design

Objective- Creating a base bracket component using the given Class A surface also consider the Tooling Axis and Draft Analysis on the model using Catia V5. The Draft analysis should meet the requirement to manufacture the component.

Class A surface-

Before Starting to work on the Surface, we have to check if there is any open boundary in the Class A surface using the Join command or Boundary command. There should be three boundaries i.e. The outer boundary, the center circle boundary, and the smaller circle boundary. This was the first check which is completed.

After this first step, we have to check the Tooling Direction using the tooling axis.

Tooling Axis- The Tooling Direction is basically the direction that the mold pulls apart. The mold is built in two separate pieces, basically. You have a Cavity side and you have the Core side. The Core pulls apart from the Cavity and that's the Dyeline or the Tooling Direction. We have to check visually all three Tooling Axis. The best possible tooling axis is along the Z axis. After creating the tooling axis, we have to look for a Draft Analysis. For the Draft Analysis, the is a Tool featured in Catia V5.

Bisecting Method- The bisecting method is basically used to find the proper tooling axis using the dummy tooling axis. In Bisecting method, bisecting line is used which either bisects the two lines or it will show an error which means the two lines are parallel to each other. In order to know whether the particular surface is tool able or not we intersect the surface with the respective plane and get a sketch that consists of two lines with the help of bisecting line option we bisect the line which creates a line at the midpoint of the two lines. Likewise, we create a tooling clearing axis for x and y which will be used to create the main tooling axis using the bisecting line option in the line command.

Then after opening the draft analysis tool box go for the compass and place the compass aligned to the tooling axis and click on the lock symbol after aligning and further click on the surface.

Class B Surface:

To create a class B surface, we start to work on the right Rib using the Extract command to extract the outer part of the Class A surface then using extrapolate command to increase the length of the component. Now the Surface creates a single part named Rib 1. Repeat the same methods for the left Rib and name it Rib 2. Now similarly extract the surfaces of the base and the Slanted part to trim them into a single part after creating the single part, try to fillet every edge as the Class A surface.

Class C Surface-

Now creating the C Surface will require the use of the Sweep command for both the surface and the holes as well. To create the C surface, we have to unhide the A surface and use its boundary and Tooling axis to create the sweep for Class C similarly using the same methods for the holes to create a complete C Surface.

Final Part-

After creating all the surfaces, we have to work on trimming the surface to get the final part, we have to trim Class A, Class B, and Class C surfaces with each other.
