Fender Design Challenge

Fender Design

Introduction:

The fenders are located over the vehicle's wheels – two in the front right and left, and two in the rear right and left of your vehicle.

Without a fender housing each wheel well, driving would be very messy. When you drive, your vehicle's tires spin very fast. As they spin, they pick up debris and moisture from the ground and spray it into the air. The kinetic energy from the tire ejects these materials into the air at high velocity.

Depending on the make of the car, fenders may be made from fiberglass, steel, or other materials. Many of these materials are designed to crumple in a crash, distributing the impact across the frame of the car to make the crash more survivable for the occupants of the vehicle.

Types of fenders

1. Full Bumper Type

2. Half Bumper Type

Designing Approach:

The Designing approach is strictly based on the model provided by the stylist designer and the master section. The model provided by the stylish is based on the external look of the fender, as design engineer, we have to consider the location of the corresponding parts so that we can provide the dips and Mountings.

Also, the Master section plays an important role as the dimensions of the dips area are totally based on the Master Section

Mounting Locations in a Front Fender:

  • Drip Area
  • Bumper Mounting
  • Sill mounting
  • A-Pillar Mounting
  • Splash/Baffle Mounting

1. Drip Area:

The Dip area connects the engine compartment with the fender. It has to be designed keeping the master section into consideration to avoid the Spring back effect to avoid vibrations in the part.

2. A-Piller Mounting:

This Mounting connects the Fender to the A-Pillar and Side view mirror area. The A-pillar mounting is slightly different from the other Mounting as the surface is slightly curved, but in order to use the mounting, we have to make a plane surface with the help of a Datum Plane.

3. Bumper Mounting:

The Bumper mounting connects the fender to the headlight area where the bumper is placed This mounting also comes with dart and bead to increase the overall stability of the part.

4. Sill Mounting:

As the name suggests, this mounting connects the fender to the Shill area, This is one of the most complicated mountings as it supports the part from the base.

5. Baffle Mounting:

There are three different baffle mounting available in the part because of its large area

Result:

All the necessary mounting with the drip area are designed according to the Master section provided.
