OBJECTIVES: To clean the geometry, extract midsurface, clean midsurface geometry and create 2D mesh with given criteria quality
Procedure:
Step 1: Open the model file, under radios profile
Step 2: View the model in topology display toolbar to evaluate its integrity.
- Observe where the model has incorrect connectivity and missing or duplicate surfaces.
- Click Geometry > Quick Edit to open the Quick Geometry Edit panel. Note that the surface edges are now colored according to their topology status.
- Click Wireframe Geometry to display the model in Wireframe mode.
- Observe the free edges and make note of where they are. The free (red) edges show where there is incorrect connectivity or gaps.
- Note the locations where there are closed loops of free edges. These are locations that probably have missing surfaces.
- Delete the surface that overhangs the round corner.
- Enter the Delete panel in one of the following ways: From the menu bar click Geometry > Quick Edit > delete surf
- Create surfaces to fill large gaps in the model. Click Geometry > Create > Surfaces > Spline/Filler to create the surface.
- Toggle edge is used to stitch the free edges by increasing value. Quick edits>filler surface is used to fill the deleted surface
Step3: Generate a midsurface from Midsurfaces panel
- From the menu bar, click Geometry > Create > Midsurfaces > Auto.
- Verify that the closed solid option is selected, and the entity selector is active and set to surfs.
- Select one surface
- To start the midsurface generation, click extract. HyperMesh creates the midsurface, and organizes the surfaces into a new Middle Surface component.
- When HyperMesh creates the midsurface, transparency is turned on for all of the other components in the model except the new Middle Surface component
- Using the Mesh > Quick edit (F11) panel improve the quality of the mesh using the following functions:
- toggle edge
- adjust/set density
- add/remove point
- split surf-node; split surf-line;
Step 4: Simplifying CAD Tools
Removing Edge Fillets
- Enter the Geometry > Defeature > Edge Fillets
- Pick the displayed surfaces.
- Enter 1 for the min radius.
- Enter 20 for the max radius.
- This will guarantee all edge fillets are selected.
- Click find.
- Click remove
- All of the edge fillets will be removed leaving sharp corners in their place
Removing Surface Fillets
- Select the surf fillets sub-panel.
- Select the displayed surfaces.
- Set the min radius to 0.1.
- Set the max radius to 5.
- Click find.
- Click remove
- The fillets will be removed once again providing for a better mesh quality
Removing Holes
- Select the pinholes sub panel.
- Select the displayed surfaces.
- Set the diameter< field to 5.
- Click find
- The small holes will be selected .click delete, the holes are removed and a fixed point is placed at their former center.
Step5: Meshing
- Set the mesh parameters and quality criteria ,min length=3.5mm,max length=7mm
- Automesh the component with target element size 5mm.
- Select the surfaces in the Standard collector.
- Click on mesh to create 2D shell elements.
- Adjust the edge densities.
- Recalculate the entire model to have a 5mm element size.
- Change the mesh style
- Click on return to save the mesh.
Step 6: Review the mesh quality.
- From the menu bar, select Mesh > Check > Elements > Check Elements to open the Check Elements panel.
- Go to the 2-d sub-panel.
- Click the length< button to evaluate the minimum length.
- Note the elements that failed the check. The topology will be edited to correct some of these, leave the rest as is.
- Access the Quality Index panel by clicking shortcut key F10
- Click return to exit the panel.
Step 7 : Solve the shell element connectivity issues using edge panel
- In the tolerance= field, type 0.01.
- Select an element in the graphics area to select the component.
- Click preview equiv.
- Click equivalence.
- Rotate and observe the model to see that the mesh still looks as it should and no elements are collapsed.
- Click delete edges.
- Review the model’s free edges again to confirm that all of the shell element connectivity problems have been corrected.
Step8: Display the element normals
- From the Checks toolbar, select the Normals icon
- Press the SHIFT+F10 keys
- Choose the elements subpanel and set toggle to vector display.
- Click display.
- The element normals are displayed using colors. The red side of the elements is the negative normal direction, while the blue side is the positive normal direction
- Notice each side of the part shows red and blue.
Step9: Assign thickness
- Assigned the Material and thickness
- Check using display 2D mesh option to check for the thickness in mesh
- Select the 2d traditional and detailed element representations to preview the thickness assigned to the component.
