Objective :

To mesh the given hood component after extracting midsurface under given criteria

Procedure :

  • Import the given hood.stp component to hypermesh
  • There are components like hatch and latch reinforcement, inner and outer hoods
  • Check for unwanted free edges and cracks surface and correct them using surface edit options

Extracting mid–surface of hood component

  • In order to extract the mid surface we first make sure that the model is free from errors
  • Then we extract the mid surface using auto mid surface options in geometry panel.
  • Auto Midsurface – Automatically extracts midsurfaces from surfaces that enclose a volume or a solid geometry
  • Observe the current display of topology colours
  • Auto clean up –use the auto cleanup panel to perform automatic geometry cleanup and prepare your model for meshing based on the parameters set in the batchmesher criteria files
  • Cleanup the extracted midsurface using Geometry >auto cleanup options to toggle all the lines automatically based on 5mm target element size
  • this procedure is repeated for all the other hood assembly components
  • assign the material and property for hood component with steel as material and thickness as 0.75mm for outer body and inner body of hood and 1.2mm for latches and hinges component
  • assign washer to the required region before meshing the component so the meshing flow quality be good

Meshing and Quality check for the component

  • set meshing parameters and Quality criteria under preference menu.
  • Now that we have entered the required criteria, we can go on to mesh the mid-surface that we have generated.
  • For meshing, the auto-mesh options under the 2d menu were used. the target length was kept as 5mm and the element type was set as mixed so that we can avoid rotating quad as far as possible
  • Try to avoid rotating quads and tria elements as far as possible.
  • Eliminate the tria using Quality setting > clean up tools> drag tria elements
  • Smooth the mesh for proper mesh flow.
  • Check the components for quality errors and correct them all using element optimize, place node, node optimize commands under clean up tools
  • Elem cleanup options can be used at some place to get rid of quality errors on element
  • Similarly mesh all the component and try to minimize the number of violations in quality. After meshing use reflect options necessary .also check for free edge using the edge options under tools and clear all the connectivity issues
  • The whole component is now meshed according to the required quality criteria
  • Select the 2d traditional and detailed element representations to preview the thickness assigned to the component.

Results

  • Creations of proper mesh flow
  • Understanding concept of correcting quality errors.
  • Comparing geometry with the FE of component to check wheather they match
  • Adjusting normal’s on the FE generated

Conclusion:

  • The geometry cleanup carried out for all parts of hood
  • Midsurface is extracted, material and properties are applied
  • Meshed the component the component under specified quality criteria
  • Thickness is assigned to all components.
