Week 2 Railwheel and Track
Understanding the effect of static structural analysis on a Railweel and track setup
Objective: To perform a static structural analysis on the rail wheel and track setup and compare the results for two different load conditions also note any change in result when a user defined result is used
Simulation Process:
Case1- comparison of the results of the simulations with two different loads i.e. 100000 N and 500000N.
Case2- compare the ansys result of the total deformations for the load of 100000 N with the user defined result
Input Geometry
- The given module was inserted into the mechanical GUI.
Material:
- The material used for the entire simulations was structural steel
Mesh
- Default mesh size of 50 m and face meshing of 35mm
Contacts:
- We need to define the contact regions with certain parameters such as adding frictional coefficient of 0.3 between the track and wheel and frictional behaviour between the wheel and shaft
Joints:
- Planar joint for the wheel as it is defined to rotate in x direction 100 mm in each step
- Translational joint on the road connected to wheel and a fixed joint for the track
- Fix the rail component using fixed joint
Analysis setting:
- The analysis is setup for 5 steps. This does not control the time step, but is only an indication of points where boundary changes. The time step is auto controlled by specifying initial ,min and max time step
Boundary conditions
- A joint translational is given to one translational joint in increments 100 for 5 steps
- Bearing load of 100000 N and 500000 N are applied to wheel in negative direction of y axis
Solutions:
All the necessary output variable are selected such as von Mesis stress, deformations and life cycle
force convergence is good sign , as we know all result is out . know we can do visualization
Case1- interpreting and comparing the result
equivalent stress
| bearing load 100000 | bearing load 500000 |
Total Deformations
| Bearing load 100000 | Bearing load 500000 |
Life comparison
| Bearing load 100000 | Bearing load 500000 |
comparing the result
on comparing the result under both load cases, there is negligible change in the value of life and total deformation whereas, the stress value changes with increase in load. The materials of wheel and shaft is to be selected carefully as the laod value increses , the stress imposing between on shaft wheel increases
Case2- implement a user defined result and comparing the obtained total deformation value with the one above having 100000N bearing load
For obtaining a user defined result for the total deformation the expression USUM used
The maximum value of the user defined result obtained was 1000mm which is exactly similar to the obtained from the inbuilt result from ansys carried out for the bearing of 100000N
conclusion:
- life decreases as ca be observed from the report as load increased
- more chances of failure in case of increased load as safety in case of increased load was observed
- mass stress induced was more for increased load case
- max deformation was observed to be same for both
