Week 10 Bullet penetrating a Bucket Challenge

Simulating a Bullet penetrating a Bucket using Ansys

Objective: To perform a Bullet Penetrating into a bucket using Explicit dynamics.

Case_1- Aluminum Alloy NL

Case_2- Copper Alloy NL

Case_3- Magnesium Alloy NL

Simulation Process:

Create Explicit Dynamics in Ansys workbench and in engineering data select the Material Tantalum from explicit materials and Stainless NL, Aluminium Alloy NL and Copper Alloy NL according to the cases.

Input Geometry

Import the geometry and check in space claim for any irregularities

Then open Ansys mechanical and rename the component as Bucket and Bullet then assign the Tantalum material to the bullet and Stainless Steel NL, Aluminium alloy NL and copper Alloy NL material according to the cases to the Bucket and change the stiffness behaviour of the bullet to Rigid.

Mesh

  • Body Sizing -The Bucket is meshed by elements Size of 8mm along its edges

Final Mesh-

Boundary conditions

Fixed support- one end of the Bucket is fixed

Velocity- Bullet provides the velocity of 139000mm/s in negative X directions

Analysis setting: set end time 1e-2, with Maximum number of cycles as 1e+7,maximum error set to 5.

  • Set end time as 1e-3, and all the setting set to default.

Solutions:

All the necessary output variable are selected such as von Mesis stress, stress intensity, equivalent strain etc.

Result – The analysis runs successfully and results obtained.

Case_1- Aluminum Alloy NL

Total Deformations

Equivalent stress

Equivalent strain

Case_2- Copper Alloy NL

Total Deformations

Equivalent stress

Equivalent strain

Case_3- Magnesium Alloy NL

Total Deformations

Equivalent stress

Equivalent strain

Conclusions:

cases Equivalent Max stress Equivalent Max Strain
Aluminum Alloy NL 7.3901 Mpa 1.9169e-002 mm/mm
Copper Alloy NL 728.27Mpa 2.5416e-002 mm/mm
Magnesium Alloy NL 588.6 MPa 4.2149e-002 mm/mm

Total deformation in case1, case2 and case3 is the same as the distance that is traversed by the Bullet in 0.001s

The highest stress is observed in case of copper alloy NL indicating copper Alloy NL offered the Maximum resistance to the incoming bullet than the other two materials
