Week 5 Sphere pressing on a plate

Analysis of Sphere Pressing on a plate

Objective: To perform the analysis to simulate a sphere pressing on a plate and observe the plastic the plastic deformation on the plate

Structural Analysis:

Structural analysis is the process of calculating and determining the effects of loads and internal forces on a structure or an object

Input Geometry

The CAD model is imported and viewed using space claim,

Material:

Structural steel is used for sphere and structural steel NL is used for plate

Contacts:

A frictional contact is defined between sphere surface and the plate with a frictional coefficient of 0.74

Symmetry definition:

The CAD model is defined with two symmetry region in X-axis and Z-axis

Mesh

The plate body and outer surface of sphere are meshed with an eleemnt size (default)

Analysis setting:

The analysis is set up for 4 steps with the following setting for all the steps.

type- Direct

large displacment on

Boundary conditions:

  • create Displacment sub menu for the sphere for Specifying its transition distance 4 mm towards the plate
  • Fixed support is used for plate to prevent it from sliding off.

All the necessary output variable are selected such as von Mesis stress, stress intensity, equivalent strain for both sphere and plate etc.

Results:

Deformation in Y direction

Equivalent stress

Equivalent strain

Equivalent strain on plate

Equivalent stress on sphere

Observations

Maximum directional deformation in Y-axis is 0.329mm

Maximum equivalent strain on plate is 1.6515e-002mm/mm

Maximum equivalent stress is 3300.7 Mpa

Conclusion

Overall, the structural analysis done on plate
