Week 1 Stress Concentration on a Plate with hole
STRESS CONCENTRATION ON A PLATE WITH HOLE
Objective: To perform static structural analysis on a plate with a hole geometry
Case 1- plate with hole
Case2- plate with multiple holes
Case: 1 -plate with hole
Procedure
- Open ansys workbench
- Update the material module as structural steel
- In then geometry model open new place claim and design the plate according to the given dimensions
To Design a plate with a hole in centre
Plate dimensions
- Length= 300 mm
- Height=120 mm
- Thickness =30 mm
- Circular hole at the centre.
- Diameter=60 mm
- Then extrude the geometry
- Then update the mode and edit it
- In the mechanical tab update the mesh intro tetrahedron and generate it .
- The in the static structure tab assign the BC
Boundary conditions
- Plate fixes at left face
- Load of 500 on the right face
Then evaluate the solutions
- In result we want maximum displacement and maximum von mesis stress
- displacement
- vonmesis stress
Case: 2 - plate with multiple holes
- Follow the above procedure but only difference is in plate dimensions
To Design a plate with a hole conditions mentioned below
Plate dimensions
- Length= 300 mm
- Height=120 mm
- Thickness =30 mm
- Circular hole at the centre.
- Diameter=60 mm
- Smaller holes 90 mm away from the centre
Boundary conditions
- Plate fixes at left face
- Load of 500 on the right face
result :
displacment
von mesis stress

Deformations the plate with one whole is having a deflections of 2.7486e-004 mm and the plate having three holes has the maximum deflection of 2.971e-004mm |

|
Von mesis stress The plate with one whole is having a stress concentration of 0.5921MPA and the plate having three holes has the minimum stress concentration of 0.57759MPA. This is because the stress lines are similar to fluid flows, hence the cross sectional in (one hole) is steep and then stress gets accumulated on single are. In the second case the cross sectional in (one hole) is stress gets accumulated on single area. In the second case the cross sectional is gradually increasing due to the presence of two holes the stress concentration is not massive |

Design Point of view
From an analysis standpoint, I would go with second case (3 holes)
- Stress concentration is lower
- We can save lot of material
Case-1 (hole in centre)
- Stress concentration is higher
- This would result in consuming higher stress concentration material and the cost is higher
Manufacturing Point of view
- From a manufacturing standpoint , case-1 is suitable
- As case-1 has , less machining time and low material cost
Case-2
- More machining time
- Much material cost
