Section Modulus calculation and optimization
Section Modulus calculation and Optimization:
Section modulus is the geometric property of the given cross-section used in the design of flexural members. Section depends only on the cross-section shape of the beam or structure. It is the important factor in designing the component because it gives the threshold value beyond which the component may fail. It makes easy to calculate stresses and strength in beam.
Calculation of section modulus of Hood Design:

Moment of inertia (MOI), Imax = 4.825300461 x 106 (mm4)
Moment of inertia (MOI), Imin = 1.440064912 x 104 (mm4)
Distance from center of the hood to the end of the hood (y) = 439.5639 mm ≈ 440 mm

Section modulus(S) = Moment of Inertia (MOI) / Distance (y)
S = I / y
For maximum moment of inertia
S = (4.825300461 x 106) / 440
S = 10.966591 x 103 mm4
For minimum moment of inertia
S = (1.440064912 x 104) / 440
S = 32.7287 mm4
Optimized Hood Design:

For maximum moment of inertia
S = (4.795261044 x 106) / 440
S = 10.898320 x 103 mm4
For minimum moment of inertia
S = (1.541892494 x 104) / 440
S = 35.04301122 mm4
From this experiment we can conclude that by increasing the distance between the top and lower face of the hood we get increased value of section modulus.
