Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

RRumman Khan1 Oct 2022

AIM:- To calculate the wheel arc for the given Fender model, by means of the European standards regulations.

INTRODUCTION:-

Wheel arc calculation is necessary for the fender design to pass the local regulation which is based on the local road conditions.

The wheel arch is a semi-circular area in the fender, which houses the wheel well. It should have sufficient clearance between the tire and wheel arch. So, that it doesn’t touch the wheel arch area during the suspension. The clearance value differs from region to region, here are a few regulations.

JAPAN REGULATION:-

- Measure clearance L of tire ‚hub, cap & fender in three different positions within area K and produce a clearance.

- Check the chart to validate ~ Clearance must be greater than 5 mm in all three positions.

- Wheel guard reqmt: The value of 'a' shall be more than 5 mm at line 30* forward and 50* rearward from the central

vertical axis of the wheel.

EUROPEAN REGULATION STANDARD:-
-Measure CL L at sections SA-SA SB-SB SC-SC SD-SD SE-SE and produce a CL check chart to validate.

-In all five sections, the CL L value should be greater than 10 mm to satisfy European regulations.

-Wheel guard requirement: The value of 'a' shall be more than 5 mm at line 30* forward and 50* rearward from the central vertical axis of the axis of the wheel.
US REGULATION STANDARDS:-
Make clearance check details on all positions from -100* to 100* & make the clearance check table.
All values should be greater than 5 mm to satisfy the regulations.
The value of 'a' shall be more than 5 mm at line 30* forward and 50* rearward from the central vertical axis of axis of wheel.
In figure the following coordinates SA, SB, SC, SD, and SE are plotted using the angles and dimensions according to the required standard.
PROJECTED POINT:-
Next the points are checked if they provide a gap of 10mm from the outer part of fender to the outer most part of the tier, if it is more than 10mm it meets the safety requirement if it is below 10mm it doesn’t meet the standard.
S-A:-
S-B:-
S-C:-
S-D:-
S-E:-
S.N. MIN.CRITERIA CALCULATED VALUE
S-A 10 10
S-B 10 9.9490
S-C 10 2.5563
S-D 10 2.8875
S-E 10 5.9973

CONCLUSION:-

As we can see apart from the S-A section no other section meet the minimum clearance criteria so the fender surface is not good for design as per the EUROPEAN WHEEL ARCH REQUIREMENT or we can say that the fender is need to send back for surfacing to the styling team to redesign the fender.
