CFD Masters at Skill-Lync: Overview and Success Stories

The job of a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Engineer is intriguing. A CFD engineer works towards building the best practices to find the solution to a problem of high complexity with reliability and accuracy, direct applicability for design including the elements of physics, numerics, mesh resolution, post-processing, and complex geometry.

CFD engineers iterate with product design cycles while ensuring operations with the budgetary and time constraints. They also experience the challenge and immense learning of working with diverse stakeholders about design impacts, including bosses who may not necessarily know the nitty-gritty of fluid dynamics, heat transfer, etc. Overall, a CFD engineer has to optimize and validate while working in iterative product design cycles.

Even after a product goes to production, CFD engineers have to perform the role of forensic evaluators of the design performance and use their unique expertise to validate or invalidate the theories generated by their teams.

This short article provides an overview of the CFD Master's and its top 5 placements.

The CFD Engineer Masters Program at Skill-Lync

The reverse-engineered Masters program for CFD engineers at Skill-Lync consists of 5 courses overall:

  1. Introduction to Computational Fluid Dynamics using MATLAB and OpenFOAM
  2. Advanced CFD using ANSYS Fluent
  3. Computational Combustion using Python and Cantera
  4. Advanced IC Engine Simulation
  5. IC Engine Calibration using GT Power

Course-Wise Structure

1. Introduction to Computational Fluid Dynamics Using MATLAB and OpenFOAM

This introductory module is the starting point and the fundamental course in the CFD Masters program. The objectives of the course are helping students understand the basics of fluid mechanics, including governing equations, the concept of discretization, and the types of discretization.

After the basics of fluid mechanics, students are also taken through practical implementations using MATLAB and OpenFoam to internalize the conceptual understanding of fluid mechanics.

2. Advanced CFD Using ANSYS Fluent

Advanced CFD using ANSYS Fluent helps students get an understanding of how ANSYS Fluent works, the various type of problems, and conceptual analysis that are possible, including multiphase flow, two-phase flow, conjugate heat transplant, turbulence modeling, thermal flows, etc.

3. Computational Combustion Using Python and Cantera

Computational combustion using Python and Cantera is focused on giving students a solid grounding in the concepts of computational combustion.

Over the last 50 years, we've seen advances in combustion modeling and the integration of submodels into system models. This has resulted in various possible use cases like compression ignition engines, pulse combustion, surface, and catalytic combustion, etc.

Because of these advances, knowing computational combustion at depth is essential for a CFD Engineer.

4. Advanced IC Engine Simulation

Advanced IC Engine Simulation is a 3D simulation course using the converge CFD software. The course enables students to evaluate the concepts of turbulence modeling, combustion modeling, emission modeling, and spray modeling using the software.

5. IC Engine Calibration Using GT Power

IC Engine calibration using GT Power is a course that enables students to learn GT Power - a 1D tool to understand how IC Engine calibration works. Furthermore, students also learn 2D and 3D solvers to ensure a holistic understanding of IC Engine Calibrations through simulations.

Overall, the five-course CFD Engineer Masters Program at Skill-Lync has scaffolded in such a manner that the students start with solid fundamentals in the initial courses. The application of concepts, the practical, experiential aspects are then gradually ratcheted up to ensure a comprehensive understand and development of skills for a potential CFD engineer.
