Aim:- To perform a transient structural analysis on a double universal joint with a spring using different materials, and to obtain the equivalent stress, total deformation for all three cases.
Procedure:-
1. Open Transient structural analysis and Import the geometry as given in the challenge.
Fig 1.Given geometry
2. Add the materials Titanium alloy, and stainless steel to the Engineering data.
3. Open the mechanical module, and delete the contacts.
4. Create a Fixed joint for the spring
Fig 2.Fixed Joint ( On the spring )
5. Create revolute joints for shaft with gear and shaft with spring.
Fig 3. Revolute joints in the component
6. Create eight body-body revolute joints defining the mobile and reference for the Trunion and Intermediate links.
Fig 4. Body-body revolute joints in the Component.
7. Give analysis settings with the time step 0.1 and with 4 steps.
8. Choose revolute joint for the shaft with gear and give joint load ( rotation )
Fig 5.Joint load ( Tabular data)
9. Before solving, give meshing with an element size of 4mm and no adaptive sizing.
Results:-
Case1:-
Structural steel
Fig 6.Total deformation ( structural steel )
Fig 7.Equivalent stress ( Structural steel )
Case 2:-
Stainless steel
Fig 8.Total deformation ( stainless steel )
Fig 9. Equivalent stress ( stainless steel )
Case 3:-
Titanium alloy
Fig 10.Total deformation ( Titanium alloy)
Fig 11.Equivalent stress ( Titanium alloy )
Comparison:-
Material Total deformation Equivalent stress
Structural steel 38.637 1478.6
Stainless steel 38.637 1431.2
Titanium alloy 38.637 726
Conclusion:-
According to the results, Total deformation is the same for all the three materials and Equivalent stress is highest in the case of Structural steel and lowest in the case of Titanium alloy. Thus transient structural analysis on a double universal joint with a spring with three different materials was done and compared.
