The only autonomous institution in the United Kingdom with a Royal Charter is the University of Buckingham. Established in 1992, Staffordshire University has two campuses in Stoke-on-Trent and Stafford. There are currently 12,000 students enrolled there. Numerous two-year "quick track" degrees in business, law, and computer science are available from the university.
Established in 1966, Leeds Trinity University received full university status in 2012. Despite being one of just two Catholic universities in the UK, it accepts students from all backgrounds. Traditional university strengths include teacher preparation and theology, but recent investments have been made to develop media studies and journalism degrees. Students now have access to full studios in a variety of fields. Six months after graduating, 95% of Leeds Trinity students are employed or enrolled in further education.
The University of Bolton was established in 1824 as the Bolton Mechanics Institute. Subsequently, the institution underwent some changes, received the authority to grant taught degrees in 1990, and received its current name in 2005. There are now more than 11,000 enrolled in this prestigious institution.
A little more than 150 kilometres north of London, in Birmingham, lies the original "redbrick" university of Great Britain. With roots going back to the 1825 Birmingham Medical School, it was established in 1900 as the replacement for Mason Science College.
The University of Birmingham received the 2014 University of the Year Award from The Times Higher Education.
In the 2015 Times and Sunday Times University Guide, Coventry University received the title of "Modern University of the Year." It was the first among top universities in the UK to offer specialised degrees like disaster management and ethical hacking. It has since added forensic chemistry and other specialised talents to its course offerings.

With campuses in Carlisle, Lancaster, and Ambleside, all in the northwest of England near the picturesque Lake District, the University of Cumbria was established in 2007. In addition, the University operates a top-ranked speciality teacher-education facility in London, according to Ofsted.
Across its six sites, there are little over 10,500 students. Cumbria offers various specialised faculties, from agriculture and forestry to teacher training and English, as it was created by merging many pre-existing institutions.
The University of Cumbria also maintains tight ties with the regional creative arts scene, which benefits the school's media, design, and art programmes.
York St. John University sprung from two Anglican teacher preparation institutions that were established in York in 1841 (for men) and 1846 (for women), respectively. It has one campus in York's historic city centre and was given university status in 2006. There are now about 6,000 students enrolled.
