Modern Automotive Coating Process

1 - Pretreatment -

a -  Removes and clean excess metal

b - Removing oil from the steaming process

c - Welding residues through three primary liquid dip processes

(1 - degreasing , 2 - conditioning , 3 - phosphating ,)

Phosphate treatment applies an inert layer of metal phosphate , providing resistance to corrosion spread.

Degreasing solution is composed of alkaline salts and surfactants and can include caustic soda , sodium carbonate.

The surfactants are type of detergents for emulsifying oils and lubricant on the BIW.

2 - Electrodepositing

E- Coating involves dipping automobile bodies into the coating solution and passing an electric current through the body.

During operation a mixture of resin , binder and paste containing the pigments is fed into the ED Tank.

Provide ( a)- Corrosion Protection , (b) - Durability , (c) - Toughness ,

After E- Coating the body enters a bake oven for heating and temp 160* C for 10min For promote maximum performance properties , enhance chip resistance and film adhesion to the body.

3 - Rust Proof Materials SEALER / PVC

The third step is under body coating and seam sealing using PVC or urethanes are applied as an anti - cheeping protection ,

Used in radiator Support , Wheel Housing , and under rar and cheap prone areas,

4 - Primer

The primer fills and smoothes minor imperfections and scratches that may be created during prior steps.

primer increases paint durability.

5 - Top Coat

Final step in the body coating process. consist . (1) - Base  Coat and  (2) - Clear Coat .

1 - Base Coat - It contains the primary coloring pigments.

type of base coat used  (1) - Solvent-Borne Medium Solid (MS) ,  (2) - Solvent-Borne High Solid (HS) ,

(3) - Water -Borne,

2 - Clear Coat - The final Coating on an automobile surface. It provides Durability , environmental etch and Scratch resistance to the overall coating.

Different Types Of Under Body Coating

1 - Rubberized under body coating - It provides sound cushioning and protection from dust , moisture and dent.

2 - Polyurethane Under Body Coating - It offers good protection against corrosion and bond with metal.  

3 - Wax or Paraffin Based Under Body Coating - Fight against moisture .

4 - Asphalt Based Under Body Coating - Best for lorries and large vehicles , provides greater degree of protection compared to rubber based coating.
