Mastering Multiple Area Pulls in Ansys SpaceClaim for 3D Modeling

logo

Skill-Lync

Welcome to the Additive Manufacturing & 3D Printing with Ansys SpaceClaim blog series! In this blog, we will explore the concept of pulling multiple area sketches and how to efficiently create holes, fillets, and chamfers in Ansys SpaceClaim for 3D printing. These techniques are essential in 3D modeling for additive manufacturing, allowing engineers and designers to create complex geometries with precision.

This week, we will build on these skills by exploring pulling multiple area sketches, creating holes, and applying chamfers and fillets to refine 3D models.

Understanding Multiple Area Pulls

When working with 2D sketches in Ansys SpaceClaim, you may encounter designs with multiple enclosed areas. Instead of pulling each section individually, Ansys SpaceClaim for additive manufacturing allows users to apply the Pull Tool across multiple areas simultaneously.

Example: Pulling Multiple Areas

Let’s take a simple concentric circle sketch as an example:

  • Draw two circles—one inside the other.
  • Activate the Pull Tool, and hover over the sketch.
  • Notice that there are two encapsulated areas: one inside the inner circle and the space between the inner and outer circles.
  • If you select only the outer area, the Pull Tool extrudes only that section.
  • To extrude both areas simultaneously, hold Ctrl or Shift and select both regions before pulling.

This technique ensures uniform extrusion, making it easier to create complex geometries for 3D printing with Ansys SpaceClaim.

Creating 3D Features: Chamfers and Fillets

In Ansys SpaceClaim for engineers, chamfers and fillets help refine sharp edges and enhance the aesthetics of 3D models.

  • Chamfers: Create a beveled edge between two surfaces.
  • Fillets: Round off sharp corners for a smoother design.

To apply these features:

  • Select an edge or corner on your 3D model.
  • Choose Fillet Tool or Chamfer Tool from the toolbar.
  • Adjust the radius or angle for desired results (e.g., 2 mm chamfer or 5 mm fillet).

Exercise: Creating a Staircase Model

Now that we understand multiple area pulls, try this simple exercise:

  • Sketch four connected squares to represent staircase steps.
  • Use the Pull Tool to extrude each step at increasing heights.
  • Apply fillets or chamfers to refine the edges.

This method demonstrates how layered extrusions can be used for real-world additive manufacturing applications.

Conclusion

Mastering multiple area pulls, fillets, and chamfers in Ansys SpaceClaim training enhances the precision and efficiency of 3D modeling for 3D printing. Stay tuned for our next Ansys SpaceClaim tutorial for beginners, where we’ll explore more advanced 3D modeling techniques for prototyping and production!
