Mastering Chamfers and Fillets in Ansys SpaceClaim

Skill-Lync

Welcome to the Additive Manufacturing & 3D Printing with Ansys SpaceClaim blog series! In this installment, we will explore chamfers and fillets—two essential tools that help refine 3D models for 3D printing. These features improve the aesthetics and functionality of 3D-printed parts, making them more ergonomic and structurally sound. Understanding how to apply chamfers and fillets effectively is a crucial skill in Ansys SpaceClaim for additive manufacturing.

What are Chamfers and Fillets?

Imagine designing a hammer handle—sharp edges may make it uncomfortable to hold. This is where fillets and chamfers come into play:

  • Fillet: Rounds off sharp edges for a smoother transition.
  • Chamfer: Creates a beveled edge between two surfaces

By applying these features, you enhance ergonomics and improve the structural integrity of your 3D model.

Creating a Hammer Representation in Ansys SpaceClaim

  • Sketch the Hammer Head: Start with a rectangle, extrude it to the desired length.
  • Create the Handle: Select a sketch plane on the hammer head and define the handle’s position.
  • Extrude the Handle: Adjust the length and dimensions to achieve the desired design.
  • Apply Chamfers and Fillets: Navigate to the Pull Tool, where you will find the Round and Chamfer options. However, these options remain inactive until you select an edge.
  • Select an Edge to Edit: Once you choose a line or edge, the tool allows you to apply the round (fillet) or chamfer.
  • Adjust the Radius: Enter specific values (e.g., 2 mm fillet) for precise refinements.

Editing Multiple Edges Simultaneously

If you want to apply fillets or chamfers to multiple edges:

  • Hold Ctrl and select multiple edges.
  • Adjust all selections at once to maintain symmetry.
  • Use the hotkeys to switch between fillets and chamfers quickly.

One interesting feature in Ansys SpaceClaim for engineers is automatic extrapolation—when increasing the fillet radius beyond the maximum, the software intelligently modifies the geometry to accommodate the transition.

Exercise: Designing a Wheel Using Chamfers and Fillets

Now that we understand chamfers and fillets, let’s apply these skills to a wheel design:

  • Start with a basic sketch using simple squares and circles.
  • Use the Trim Entities Tool to refine the shape and remove excess geometry.
  • Extrude the Design using the Pull Tool.
  • Apply Chamfers and Fillets to create smooth transitions and rounded surfaces.
  • Refine the Model by adjusting dimensions and ensuring a clean finish.

Key Takeaways from this Lesson

The Pull Tool is versatile—it can add material or remove material from 3D models.

  • You can apply fillets and chamfers to multiple edges simultaneously.
  • Use the Trim Entities Tool to refine 2D sketches before extruding.
  • Sketch planes can be repositioned or newly created to modify models efficiently.

These techniques are essential for prototyping, product design, and additive manufacturing.

Conclusion

Mastering chamfers, fillets, and pull techniques in Ansys SpaceClaim for 3D printing is essential for creating ergonomic, structurally sound models. Whether designing industrial components or customized 3D-printed products, refining edges enhances both form and function. Stay tuned for the next Ansys SpaceClaim tutorial for beginners, where we’ll explore advanced editing techniques to optimize 3D models for manufacturing.
