In this project, an automotive assembly will be surface wrapped in ANSA. The assembly consists of: Engine, Gearbox and Transmission - all as separate geometries. The geometry has multiple errors, these errors will be fixed. The fixed geometries will be merged in ANSA and a surface wrap will be performed. The target length for the surface wrap is 3mm.
Each geometry will be individually searched for errors and fixed, starting with:
Engine
The engine's geometry was imported into ANSA and this is the initial geometry:
Switching to wireframe view (and hiding double cons),
Upon further inspection, the errors are primarily of three types: single CONS, overlapped surfaces and extra surfaces shaped like a donut/ring. Since this a surface wrap, internal errors do not play a significant role in the wrap generated. Hence, internal errors are not given much importance to remove.
The extra surfaces are removed by visual inspection and by hiding required PIDs. Other surfaces such as belts, chains hinder the final quality of a coarse surface wrap (as in this case), they are removed as well.
This is the geometry after all errors are rectified and other surfaces removed:
Gearbox
The gearbox's geometry was imported into ANSA and this is the initial geometry:
Switching to wireframe view,
Upon further inspection, the errors are primarily of three types: single CONS, overlapped surfaces and extra surfaces. Since this a surface wrap, internal errors do not play a significant role in the wrap generated. Hence, internal errors are not given much importance to remove.
The extra surfaces are removed by visual inspection.

Transmission
The transmission's geometry was imported into ANSA and this is the initial geometry:

Merging the Assembly
File -> Merge ->
Select the transmission and gearbox file,
Open, and the following settings are used:
Covering all holes is essential for generating a high quality surface mesh, hence all open holes are closed using the TOPO -> Faces -> New -> tool, this is the geometry after merging and closing holes:
Surface Wrap
The surface wrap is generated by going to: C.Mesh -> Elements -> Wrap -> Constant Length
Double click on Empty,
Double click on Untitled and the following settings are used:
Castellation tab:
Mesh tab:
OK is clicked and 0 is double clicked.
All PIDs are selected and moved to Octree Scenario:
OK is clicked, and the wrap is started by pressing the Run button.
The wrap has 771098 elements, all of them are triads.
Zooming in,
Taking a look at the engine,
Wireframe view,
If the geometry has to be captured more precisely than the current wrap, a lower size is used. This lower size will cause increase in time taken and file size as well.

Project 2 - Rankine cycle Simulator
In this project, I will be writing code in MATLAB to simulate a Rankine Cycle for the given parameters. A Rankine Cycle is an ideal thermodynamic heat cycle where mechanical work is extracted from the working fluid as it passes between a heat source and heat sink. This cycle or its derivatives is used in steam engines…

Project 1 - Parsing NASA thermodynamic data
In this project, I will be parsing a data file prepared by NASA. The contents of the data file can be used to generated thermodynamic properties such as Specific Heat at Constant Pressure 'C_p' (J/(kg.K)), Enthalpy HorQ (J) and Entropy S (J/(kg.mol)) at various temperatures. The files will be parsed in MATLAB…

Week 5 - Genetic Algorithm
In this project, I will be generating a stalagmite function in MATLAB and find the global maxima of the function using Genetic Algorithm. A stalagmite function is a function which generates Stalactites, which are named after a natural phenomenon where rocks rise up from the floor of due to accumulation of droppings of…

Week 4.1 - Solving second order ODEs
In this project, I will be writing code in MATLAB to solve the motion of a simple pendulum. A simple pendulum motion's depends on Newton's Second Law. The equation which governs the motion of a simple pendulum is (with damping) d2θdt2+bmdθdt+gLsinθ=0 Where, θ is the angular displacement…
