MOTION ANALYSIS OF PISTON ASSEMBLY Aim: To create CAD model of all the parts of piston assembly and assemble all the parts. To do the analysis using 3 different conditions. Sr no Wrist pin offset (mm) Crank speed (rpm) 1. No offset 2000 2. 10 mm positive offset 2000 3. 10mm negative offset 2000 Wrist pin…

MOTION ANALYSIS OF PISTON ASSEMBLY
Aim:
Sr no |
Wrist pin offset (mm) |
Crank speed (rpm) |
1. |
No offset |
2000 |
2. |
10 mm positive offset |
2000 |
3. |
10mm negative offset |
2000 |
Wrist pin offset: The position of the wrist pin is going to be varied as shown in below images:
CASE 1: No Offset
CASE 2: 10 mm positive offset-If the crank rotation is in clockwise direction
CASE 3: 10 mm Negative offset- If the crank rotation is in clockwise direction
PROBLEM STATEMENT:
Obtain the linear displacement of the Piston Head in all the above 3 cases. Then export the graphs to excel and then superimpose all the 3 graphs into a single graph.
CAD model of parts of Piston Assembly in SolidWorks Software:
Piston-head:
Crank:
A crank is an arm attached to the right angle to a rotating shaft by which circular motion is imparted to or received from the shaft.
When it is combined with the connecting rod, it can be used to convert the circular motion into reciprocating motion or vice versa.
Wrist-Pin / Gudgeon-Pin
The engine piston is connected to the connecting rod with the help of a hollow hardened steel tube called as Wrist pin or Gudgeon pin.
Connecting Rod:
A connecting rod is a connection between the piston and a crankshaft. The connecting rod carries the power thrust from piston to the crankpin and hence it must be very strong and rigid. Also it should be light as possible.
Endcap:
Steps for motion analysis:
Note: In positive and negative offset cases the crank rotation is in Clockwise direction.
Solid Bodies contacts are shown as below:
The first contact set is applied between the crank and end cap:
NOTE: BLUE color indicates the contact sets.
The second contact set is applied between the crank and connecting rod:
NOTE: BLUE color indicates the contact sets.
The third contact set is applied between connecting rod and the wrist-pin:
NOTE: BLUE color indicates the contact sets.
The fourth contact set is applied between the wrist pin and the piston head:
NOTE: BLUE color indicates the contact sets.
Gravity is applied as shown below:
Motion analysis settings:
Results and Observations of 3 different cases:
A
Result of Case 1: No Offset
Result of Case 2: Positive Offset
Case 3: Negative offset
Comparison of the results:
Parameters |
Max value |
Min Value |
No offset |
302.47 mm |
202.44 |
Positive offset |
302.47mm |
202.44 |
Negative offset |
302.50 mm |
202.50 |
Conclusion:
From the above table we can see that values of No offset and positive offset are almost same while that of negative offset is slightly more.

Underbody Coating
Underbody Coating: In Indian road conditions, a cars underbody is affected by corrosion and also wear and tear caused by muddy water, bad roads, stones and other obstacles on the road To prevent this underbody coating provides long term protection from corrosion to car’s underbody. It also helps to protect parts…
