Application of Embedded Systems Projects

Embedded systems are found everywhere. The advent of embedded technology has revolutionised the electronics industry to a greater extent. From consumer electronics to industrial applications embedded systems plays a major role in performing tasks. Due to their reliability and accuracy in providing results they are being used.

Define Embedded Systems

Embedded systems are distinct from general-purpose computers in fulfilling a specific set of instructions. These small computers are integrated into larger machines or devices to ensure secure and uninterrupted operation.

To allow them to interact effectively with each component, they use a variety of sensors, actuators, and converters. Many industrial embedded solutions utilise real-time software to process data quickly and provide instantaneous results.

Types of Embedded Systems

Types of Embedded Systems

Embedded systems can be divided into various types based on their performance, functional requirements, and the microcontroller's performance.

These types include:

  • Stand-Alone Embedded Systems
  • Real-Time Embedded Systems
  • Networked Embedded Systems
  • Mobile Embedded Systems
  • Small Scale Embedded Systems
  • Medium Scale Embedded Systems
  • Sophisticated Embedded Systems.

Fundamentals of Embedded Systems

An embedded system comprises three major parts: embedded system hardware, embedded system software, and an operating system.

Embedded System Hardware

An embedded system, like any other electronic system, requires a hardware platform on which to operate. A microprocessor or a microcontroller is used to build embedded system hardware. Input/output (I/O) interfaces, a user interface, memory, and a display are all components of embedded system hardware.

An embedded system typically includes the following components:

  • Power Supply
  • Processor
  • Memory
  • Timers
  • Serial communication ports
  • Output/Output circuits
  • System application-specific circuits

Embedded System Software:

The embedded system software is designed to do a certain job. It is often written in a high-level format and then compiled to create code that may be stored in the hardware's non-volatile memory. Embedded system software is intended to keep three constraints in mind:

  • System memory availability
  • Processor speed availability
  • When the system constantly runs, the power dissipation for events such as stop, run, and wake up must be limited.

Real-Time Embedded System

A real-time embedded system is a computer system that is designed to complete a specified task in a short period. It is often embedded in a bigger system and is in charge of directing the behaviour of the entire system. Industrial automation, process control, medical devices, military, automotive, and aerospace systems all use real-time embedded systems.

In this article, we shall cover the top projects of real-time embedded systems applications and how they are deployed in various industries.

Real-Time Application of Embedded System Projects

  • Controlling Street Lights Using an Embedded System

The major goal of this project is to detect vehicle movement on highways and turn on street lights ahead of it, then turn off the street lights as the car passes to save energy. In this project, a PIC microcontroller is programmed using embedded C or assembly language.

  • Embedded System for Monitoring Excessive Speed on Highways

This project aims to create a highway speed-checker device that detects reckless driving on highways and alerts traffic authorities whenever the speed checker detects any vehicle exceeding the specified speed limits on highways.

  • Traffic Signal Control System Embedded System

The primary purpose of this project is to create a traffic light system based on density. The signal time at each intersection adjusts automatically based on the traffic quantity at each junction. Traffic congestion is a big issue in many places worldwide, giving commuters and tourists recurring nightmares.

  • Auto Intensity Control Embedded System

This project is intended to use solar electricity from photovoltaic panels to manage the intensity of LED-based street lighting. Solar energy is becoming more popular, and more institutions and individuals are turning to it. Photovoltaic panels are utilised in this project to charge batteries by converting solar energy into electrical energy. To control the charging, a solar charge controller circuit is employed.

  • Vehicle Tracking Using an Embedded System

The project's primary goal is to use a GPS modem to pinpoint the exact location of a car to reduce vehicle theft. The GSM modem delivers an SMS to a preset mobile phone, which saves the data. An LCD shows location data in the form of latitude and longitude numbers. Because the microcontroller (AT89C52) is pre-programmed with the Keil software, it constantly checks the GPS modem.

  • Embedded System Application for War Field Spying Robot

This project aims to create a robotic vehicle that can be operated remotely and is equipped with a wireless camera for monitoring. The camera-equipped robot can wirelessly broadcast real-time footage with night vision capabilities. This type of robot can be useful for espionage in combat zones. For the necessary operation, an 8051 series microcontroller is employed.

  • Home Automation System Using an Embedded System

The project's primary goal is to create a home automation system with an Android app-based remote control. The remote operation is carried out by an Android OS-based smartphone or tablet, for example, using a graphical user interface-based touch screen. The Android application acts as a transmitter, sending on/off orders to the receiver where loads are linked.

  • Industrial Temperature Control Embedded System

The primary goal of this industrial temperature controller project is to regulate the temperature of any device in any industrial application based on its requirements. The temperature from -55°C to +125°C is displayed on an LCD. The microcontroller, which is from the 8051 families, is at the heart of the circuit and controls all of its activities.

Conclusion

The article has highlighted some of the major application areas of embedded systems in various industries. As technology continues to evolve, new possibilities will emerge, and the applications of embedded systems will only continue to expand.
