A Telecom Engineer has many responsibilities in their field. Their job roles include the following:

  • Telecommunications engineers are experts in managing audio, video, calls, and text data across different communication channels. They are in charge of designing, installing, and maintaining telecommunications equipment and ensuring that data is delivered with quality.
  • Telecom Engineers are responsible for researching new network technology and suggesting integration into existing systems. They must ensure the network is always available and provide essential maintenance and support when needed. They organise, arrange, and participate in the equipment installation process. They must also be knowledgeable in network interoperability and integration. 
  • The Telecom Engineer is responsible for coordinating data management and must know about system-level product design and configuration. They create drawings and design documentation and advise minimising design complexity and expenses. They must also be familiar with current and upcoming technology. 
  • Telecom Engineers are responsible for network security, network synchronisation, and bandwidth availability. They design and maintain telephone and internet communication networks and must be able to identify and fix issues with fibre optics and copper wires. They perform regular preventative maintenance and help set up system monitoring to reduce the likelihood of equipment failure.

Job Description of Telecommunication Engineer

The Telecom Engineer is a specialised professional with minimal voice, data, fibre optics, radio, and satellite supervision. They are responsible for overseeing the telephony systems, coordinating with internal and external stakeholders, and activating escalation procedures when needed. 

Additionally, they must ensure that the service standards outlined in the operation-level and service-level agreements are met. 

The Telecom Engineer's responsibilities also include the following:

  • Logging and database tables
  • Phone system administration
  • Inbound and outbound contact centre call flow
  • Outbound dialer functions -License reconciliation
  • Monitoring and responding to system errors
  • Maintaining an audit of maintenance holes, hand holes, and pull boxes 
  • Designing outside plant network facilities and applicable network infrastructure routes
  • Recording verification and document preparation necessary to prepare work order construction prints

The Telecom Engineer must respond to incidents, assist with a resolution, and keep the telecom systems and documentation up to date. They should regularly participate in disaster recovery exercises and monitor, operate, and improve the telephony systems. Lastly, they must handle system-down emergencies, hardware, software, and network errors.

Aside from this, the telecom engineer job description includes the following: 

  1. Design, implement and troubleshoot telecommunications systems.
  2. Worked with complicated network and switching systems.
  3. Configure networks to enable smooth data transfer that achieves the organisation's goal.
  4. Manage new and current telecom equipment and hardware and software upgrades.
  5. Evaluates computer, server, network, and voice technical issues and resolve them as soon as possible.

Education & Certification for Telecom Engineer Jobs

To enter the area of telecommunications engineering, a Bachelor's degree in electronics and communication engineering or comparable experience is necessary. An entry-level graduate may only be able to take on this role once, but certification programs and work experience can help them advance their careers.

Telecom Engineer Salary

The salary of a telecommunications engineer can range widely based on experience and job role. Telecommunications Technicians typically earn a minimum of $25/hour, while Voice Engineers can earn up to $85,841 annually. The average telecommunications engineer's salary in the United States is $102,450 per year or $394 per day. 

Freelance telecom engineers can make up to $38/hour, allowing them to work from anywhere, with no fixed timings, routine work, and diverse opportunities for higher income.

Telecom Engineer Salary in India

In India, telecom engineers are among the highest-paid professionals. In India, telecom engineers earn highly competitive pay. Experience, qualifications, job description, and company determine a telecom engineer's compensation.

A telecom engineer in India makes an average of between Rs. 3,00,000 and Rs. 8,00,000 annually. On the other hand, experienced telecom engineers can earn up to Rs. 10 lakhs per year.

In addition to their base income, telecom engineers are entitled to various perks and benefits such as medical insurance, provident fund, performance incentives, etc. Many telecom businesses also pay more to engineers with specialised knowledge and skill in specific areas.
