The last five years have seen a steady decline in the giant of social media, Facebook. But it has also seen the rise of platforms that cater to an audience which loves short-form content. Instagram reels, YouTube shorts, and the now-banned TikTok all capitalize on the audiences' shortening attention span leading to the spectacular growth of international content creators.
Dig a little deeper, and you will uncover the reason behind the rise of short-form content — the availability of cheap and fast mobile internet. Engineers and scientists are still evaluating the impact of 4G technology on our society. In India, 4G has empowered the growth of multiple first-generation entrepreneurs and given a voice to the voiceless.
While the wheel supported the evolution of humans from just being hunter-gatherers into creating settled societies based on agriculture. It facilitated trade between far-flung corners of the world and ignited a robust exchange of ideas. In the internet age, the world wide web is helping humans evolve past their pastoral roots and create a better interconnected web of humanity. The speed and pervasiveness of the internet have helped in seeding ideas for a better tomorrow among the younger generation that grew up with it. The entire repository of unlimited human knowledge is available to every human being with an internet connection.
With the launch of 5G, the citizens of India and the world are again at the precipice of a generational transformation. How will 5G transform the telecom industry in India, and how will 5G bring the next generation of Indians online?
The change from 3G to 4G was a pronounced upgrade. For the first time, mobile internet could rival the speeds offered by broadband and fixed-line telecom communications. Thanks to the improvement in the bandwidth of 4G technology, telecommunication industry operators could offer internet solutions to first-time internet users at a relatively low cost. With over 43% of the entire country connected to the world wide web, the adoption of 4G has changed perceptions and created a new captive market for business solutions.
In the United States, the telecommunication industry's revenue grew by 253% while enabling the generation of 20.4 million jobs; that's one in six jobs directly or indirectly created by the 4G industry.
The continued massive roll-out of 5G infrastructure will increase the practical applications of the technology. These are the ways 5G technology will evolve in the future.
India will have over 1.2 billion smartphones by 2027, constituting about 94% of the total phones in the country. Due to the continued migration from 4G to 5G, the number of 4G users will continue to reduce and account for only 55% of the total user base in India. India will also witness a jump in internet traffic per smartphone, increasing from the current 18GB per month to a little over 50GB per month in 2027. This increase in accessibility will enable the evolution of multiple industries, from financial technologies to autonomous vehicles.
5G-led FinTech instruments will add USD 330 billion to the international economy by 2030. In India, this movement will decrease brick-and-mortar banking and increase internet banking. Security is one of the reasons why Indians are still apprehensive about using mobile banking, but 5G-enabled blockchain technologies serving as the backbone of financial transactions will strengthen the security of fund transfers. Bank users can leverage the high-speed transfer and low latencies of 5G networks to engage in internet banking.
Wearables are small-form Internet of Things-enabled devices that improve the user's quality of life. Currently, watches that track the calorie, blood pressure, pulse, and distance walked by a user dominate the wearables market. The rapid adoption of 5G will increase the practical capabilities of these wearables, and the lowered energy requirements will enable OEMs to manufacture devices placed inside a patient. An example of wearables that leverage the low-energy feature of 5G is the IoT-enabled pacemakers that monitor the patient's blood pressure and trigger a warning before the onset of heart failure.
Augmented and virtual reality require networks that can transfer huge amounts of data at low latencies. AR technology will enable users to learn and understand complex problems from the comfort of their houses. Advanced VR technology, on the other hand, will empower communities to understand problems and devise ingenious solutions. Healthcare professionals will leverage the power of AR and VR to structure new learning methodologies and better understand patient problems. The immersive experience of VR and AR will also create new avenues for entertainment and delivering engaging content. For example, thanks to the near real-time data transfer, fans can truly experience the edge-of-the-seat action.
The beamforming feature of 5G allows operators to identify the easiest route to deliver data. 5G operators use this feature to enable direct communication with the antennae on an airplane providing high-speed internet for a large user base. The latter is another feature of 5G that enables multiple users to use the same bandwidth reducing the operating cost while increasing customer satisfaction.
True autonomous self-driving cars cannot have any lag between data sent from the various sensors that enable autonomous driving. Utilizing 4G-enabled cloud services to send commands between cars on the road and various obstacles would create a lag of 30 to 40 milliseconds, which can be the difference between life and death in a high-stress situation. But thanks to the low latency of 5G connections, car manufacturers can now rely on instant feedback to create autonomous vehicles without human feedback.
This low latency and high bandwidth feature of 5G enables the deployment of robots in various verticals, from airports, where robots can help passengers and move baggage, to disaster zones, where robots can map and reach dangerous places for human operators.

This inquisitive nature to learn and understand the unknown gives them the drive to boldly step into an unexplored area. Only this constant drive to better their understanding of the world creates the engineers who truly make a difference.
