Week 1 Stress Concentration on a Plate with hole
Objective: To analyse and differentiate between 2 designs, Plate with Hole and Plate with Multiple Holes, on the basis of deformation and stress and choose between the 2 based on ease of manufacturing.
Setup:While fixing one of the faces of the plate to a fixed support, we have applied a tension force of 500N on the opposite face. We have analysed this setup for deformation and stress developed
From an analysis standpoint we can see that while the Plate with Multiple Holes undergoes more deformation on comparison with the Plate with Hole, the difference in magnitude of the deformation is 0.00000005 m or almost enitrely negligible. The maximum stress developed is much higher for the Plate with Hole in comparison to the Plate with Multiple Holes. The difference is in the range of 10,000 Pa. From this we deduce that the Plate with Multiple Holes deforms more but with less stress developed and is therefore a superior design to the design of Plate with Hole.
To drill a single hole into a slab is a job that consumes very little time as compared to that of multiple holes with different dimensions. i.e. : A factory is certainly to be able to produce far more in number of the Plate with Hole than that of the Plate with Multiple Holes.Hence the design of Plate with Hole is far more superior as it is a stronger design which is easier to produce as compared to that of Plate with Multiple Holes.
| Plate with Hole | Plate with Multiple Holes | |
| Total Deformation | 2.50E-07 | 2.98E-07 |
| Maximum Stress Generated | 5.35E+05 | 4.94E+05 |
