Week 9 Machining with Planer Challenge
Aim: Perform an explicit dynamics simulation to find out the Equivalent Stress, Total Deformation and also insert a User defined result to calculate the temperature of the body. You need to perform this for 2 cases. One will be with a cutting velocity of 20000mm/s and the other will be with a cutting velocity of 15000mm/s.
Setup: We begin by assigning the required material to the workpiece(Steel 1006) and deleting all software generated contacts.
We mesh the cutting tool using a patch conforming method with tetrahedrons and edge sizing of 10 divisions on the workpiece.
The end time for the simulation is then entered in analysis settings, here 7.5e-4.
We provide a fixed support to the workpiece and velocity to the cutting tool.
For Case 1 the velocity is 20m/s and for Case2 it is 15m/s
Results:
|
Directional Deformation(mm) |
Equivalent Stress (MPa) |
Temperature (K) |
|
|
Case 1 |
12.345 |
698.2 |
586.97 |
|
Case 2 |
8.3293 |
692.83 |
574.92 |

Conclusion: Due to the lower velocity we can see that the deformation, stress developed and the change in temperature in the 2nd case is lower than the 1st.
