Challenge

Week 11 Car Crash simulation

Aim: To perform a parametric study using 3 different values of thickness for the car body.

Setup: Assign the material (Stainless Steel NL) to the car body and delete all computer generated contacts.

Assign the thickness of the car body as Parametric and give it the value of 0.3.

The thickness of the car body we use will be 0.3, 0.6 and 0.9 mm.

The wall in question is meshed using tetrahedral patch conforming method.

The rear of car body is then provided with a face sizing with a mesh size of 175mm and the wall and the car body is meshed with an element size of 57.978mm.

We use the same rear body panels as a fixed support as we did for the face sizing and provide the wall with a displacement of 500 mm.

The end time setting for the simulation is 0.001 s.

Results:

Total Deformation (mm)

Equivalent Stress (MPa)

Case 1

1036.6

11826

Case 2

1029.7

11721

Case 3

1023.8

11616

Case 1

Case 2

Case 3

Conclusion: From the above information we can see that increasing thickness reduces both deformation as well as stress developed.
