Week 8 Worm Gear Challenge
Aim: To rotate the worm so as to get to almost end of the half cut and get results for Equivalent stress, Equivalent elastic strain and the total deformation in the model.
Setup: We begin by defining the contact, the face of the threaded portion of the worm gear and the face of the spur gear.
Our next step is to define the joints which in this case are the 2 revolute joints between the ground and the gear and the ground and the worm gear.
The default mesh is fine enough for the parameters of this simulation and we proceed to establish the analysis settings. :
- Number of steps : 30
- Initial Time step: 0.2s
- Minimum time step : 0.2s
- Maximum Time step: 0.5s
We then proceed to provide the load on the structure with a joint load on the ground to worm gear joint. The maximum rotation of the worm is 1500 deg which means 50deg per step.
Results:

Conclusion: As evident from the images the points of maximum stress and strain are the tooth flanks.
