Week 9 Tension and Torsion test challenge
Aim: Perform the tension and torsion test on the specimen.
For the tension test, displace one end of the specimen to 18mm while keeping the other fixed. You will need to find out the total deformation, equivalent stress and temperature of the specimen.
For the torsion test, you will need to displace one end of the specimen to an angle of 1200 degree. Find out the total deformation, equivalent stress and temperature of the specimen.
Setup: We will be using explicit dynamics to simulate this experiment with the specimen material being used is Steel 1006.
We begin by establishing 2 new coordinate Systems on the end structures of the specimen. This is done to emphasise the sphere of influence while meshing on these sections.
We then mesh the geometry using different sizing for all 3 coordinate systems(1 original centre and 2 user defined).
We set the end time as 0.001s and introduce a fixed support on one end and displacement on the other.
For the tension test the displacement is provided along the x axis and is 18mm.
For the torsion test we provide a 3rd coordinate system where the y axis curls along the curved surface of the specimen and provide a displacement of 1200 deg.

Conclusion: We can see that the material has high torsional Shear Strength which can be inferred from the higher deformation, stress and temperature values.
