Underbody Coating

Aim :-Write a one-pager about Under-Body Coating and its purpose, its types in detail, and its pros and cons.

Theory :-

Undercoating :-

  • Undercoating is the sprayed application of a wax or rubber-based composite onto the entire underside of the vehicle.
  • It's designed to create a rust-proof layer between the underside of the vehicle and the water, ice, and salt of the road.
  • Undercoating provides a more comprehensive protective layer for your vehicle.

  • It also provides a long term protection from corrosion to car’s underbody and also protects parts like internal body panels, frame rails and other inner cavities that are not physically accessible but are prone to corrosion.

Purpose of Undercoating :-

  • Undercoating is designed to help lengthen the life of a car by preventing rust and other corrosion issues.
  • An undercoating is great, especially in an environment that is not always dry, such as in Seattle.
  • Moisture can get trapped in and around components of vehicles, resulting in rust.

process of Undercoating :-

  • Pre-treatment: removes and cleans excess metal and forms an appropriate surface structure enabling bonding of a corrosion protection layer.
  • The next step is electrodeposition (ED) of the anti-corrosion or rust prevention layer.
  • A sealer like Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVC) is applied for anti-corrosion, elimination of water leaks, and minimization of chipping and vibrational noise.
  • A primer is then applied to promote adhesion between the surface and the basecoat; it also imparts a smoother surface for subsequent layers and has anti-chipping properties.
  • Finally, the topcoats that include a basecoat and clear coat are applied; they provide surface properties that are sought , smoothness, and weather resistance.

Types of Undercoating :-

Polyurethane:

  • The biggest upside to polyurethane undercoating is that it fills in cracks you might not even be able to see, pushing out salt and moisture in the process. This type of undercoating even inhibits corrosion on a pretty aggressive level. The downside is the extensive prep time required to do the job right.

Rubberized:

  • The benefit to this undercoating is right there in the name, rubber. This undercoating is a bit softer, which allows some debris to bounce off instead of causing dents or nicks where rust can get a foothold. As a result, it’s one of the most popular ways to undercoat a car.

Paraffin or wax-based:

  • This is an inexpensive and easy way to get the job done. Like polyurethane, this option fills cracks and crevices to provide protection for those hard-to-see places. If there’s a downside, it’s durability. These aren’t do-it-once-and-forget-it undercoatings, and you’ll probably have to reapply paraffin or wax-based undercoatings every year.

Pros and Cons :-

PROS :-

  • It provides a layer of protection against corrosion.
  • It will extend the life of your vehicle.
  • It may help to reduce interior noise.
  • There are multiple undercoating methods that can be used.
  • It can be applied to damaged areas also.

CONS :-

  • It is less helpful if corrosion is already present.
  • It adds weight to the vehicle.
  • An undercoating is not impervious to damage.
