Title : Modelling and Assembling a Chopper
Objective : To understand the application of basic principles and features of Solidworks.
Introduction : This project provides an introductory view for using Solidworks to model an American Chopper part by part and render the final assembly of all parts into presentation level images. It has to be noted that the desined chopper is by no means an operational design but a solid body model to describe the look and feel of the Chopper. The basic principles used in this project will help to understand the possibilites of CAD in Solidworks, that can be utilised for other applications, and will familiarize you with commonly used features within the tool.
Methodology / Approach :
The fundamentals of design are considered and explicit details like the exact measurements/dimesions are abstracted. The approach to design in Solidworks like any other CAD is to use 2-D planes to define the boundaries of your part and use multiple sketches like that across the standard 3-D planes to extrapolate them in order to create surfaces and solid bodies.
Description :
1. Boss Extrude : used to create solid surface from a sketch in any direction.
sketch :
After extrude:
2. Revolve :
sketch:
Feature:
3. Filet : For smoothing the extruded features.
4. Chamfer : To define edges on the etruded features.
5. Shell : To make solid bodies Hollow as in the case of tanks.
6. Swept Boss : To extrude a sketch across a defined curve sketch.
Mirror : to mirror/ copy the same feature at an equal distance from a mirror plane :
Draft : to taper a solid model.
Patterns: Linear and circular patterns allow you to duplicate features w.r.t to linear or circular/curved reference respectively.
Project curve : to combine two or more curves in different planes to create a 3-D curve.
Combine : Enables you to add multiple bodies to create one hole.
Sketch Tools : All basic tools like in MS Paint but with more features.
Assmbly Model Graphics:
Rendered Eamples :
Conclusion :
The Chopper was designed in parts and assembled in Solidworks and a photo realistic render was created using Visualize.
