In a car the most exposed part of the car is the outer body and the underbody of the car as they are direct in contact with the water, dust, mud, etc. They have more chances of getting damaged than the other parts of the cars.It prevents the under body of the car from corrosion. If there will be cavities generated in the underbody of the cars, then there is a chance of internal parts getting damaged.

The above figure shows the car having the undercoating.

Types of vehicle undercoating 

• Rubberized Undercoating

    In this undercoating a thick film of rubber is generated as to protect the underbody of the car from rust, moisture, dents, etc.  

• Asphalt based undercoating

     Asphalt based undercoating is generally used in heavy vehicles like trucks, heavy machinery, etc. It is formulated with rubberized material to aid in noise reduction.

• Polyurethane Undercoating

       Polyurethane Undercoating closes up splits and fractures on the underbody of the vehicle. As in the case of asphalt based coating, it can also be painted. It makes bond with the metal and acts protects the underbody from corrosion.

• Wax or Paraffin - Base Undercoating

      Wax or Paraffin - Base Undercoating is used  to fill cracks and  seams in underbody. It is one of the cheapest coating method and also the quickest method. This undercoating method has less life and has to be done every month.

Advantages of under-body coating

• It provides protection against rusting of the under body, acting as barrier between the under body and the moisture.
• It also provides strength to the der body of the vehicle.
• It also helps in noise reduction  for vehicles.
• It  increases the life of the vehicle as it protect the under body and internal parts of the car.
• It also acts as a heat insulator and protects the internal parts from outside temperature.

 Disadvantages of under-body coating

• It increases the total weight of the vehicle.
• It is to be applied before the corrosion starts.
• It is a costly process.
• There are chances of damage during application of under body coating.
