Underbody Coating

UNDER BODY COATING:

Introduction:

The automobile sheetmetal materials mostly carried out are:

  • Mild steel
  • Aluminum
  • Stainless steel

From these mild steel is mostly used material in manufacturing because of its properties like strength, easy to handle and transform automobile parts, inexpensive, availability etc. But mild steel prone to form rust and corrosion. So to prevent the material from rust and corrosion the underbody coating is carried.

Under body coating is one of the major process carried out by automobile industries. Its role is to protect the vehicle from corrosion for a long term. It also protects the internal body pannel and area which are not access but prone to rust. Under body coating is done to the BIW (Body in white) stage for a car before the primer coating and painting process is carried out.

For Indian road conditions the under body coating protects the car from minor dents from the small rocks which hit the vehicle under body and prevents rust and corrosion from the splash of water during monsoon season.

Different stages of BIW parts:

  • ED coating (electro deposition coating)
  • Heating chamber
  • Primer coating
  • Under body sealing
  • Painting
  • Inspection

1.) ED coating:

It is the first step to carried out to the BIW components. It helps the vehicle from rusting and corrosion. It also helps for better absorbtion of praimer and paint coating.

2.) Heating chamber:

After ED coating the vehicle BIW part is moved to heating chamber where its dried and water droplets are eliminated.

3.) Primer coating:

The BIW part is coated with primer for the better absorbtion of paint to the vehicle. Epoxy primer is mostly used primer in automobile industry.

4.) Under body sealing:

Under body sealing is done to prevent the water from external source to enter into the vehicle.

5.) Painting:

After these process the painting process is carried out.

6.) Inspection:

Finally inspection is done under bright light and moved to next process.

Different types of under body coating:

  • Rubberized coating
  • Polyurethane coating
  • Wax or paraffin based coating
  • Asphalt based coating

Rubberized under body coating is widely used process by automobile industries.

Pros of under body coating:

  • Protection against corrosion and rust.
  • Extend the vehicle life
  • Prevent minor damages
  • Reduce noise and vibration in car

Cons of under bodu coating:

  • Not effective on cars with corrosion
  • Expensive
  • Makes vehicle little heavy

Conclusion:

This study analysis that under body coating has lot of benifits and most of the automobile industries are carried out.
