Underbody Coating

UNDERBODY COATING

Underbody coating is usually a dense cladding (often based on rubber) applied uniformly to the undercarriage of the automobile. It is normally sprayed or painted on when the car is just out of the dealership and is clean. But even if you are getting the undercoating applied after a couple of years, it’s fine too. This is because it can prevent further damage to the undercarriage. The main purpose of undercoating is to check rust especially in the body components like frame rails along with other exposed metal parts. Underbody coating can also reduce wear and tear.

TYPES OF UNDERCOATING

Rubberised underbody coating

It is considered to be the best underbody coating available. It preserves the underbody from the scratches and all.It can also be applied to the body without any hassle.

Wax based underbody coating

During application, they drip or flow into seams and cracks to provide protective properties. They are usually available in a spray gun canister or in an aerosol can and offer at least a base protection in moderately humid climates.

Asphalt based underbody coating

It is suited for lorries, trucks and large vehicles this provides a greater degree of protection compared to rubber-based coatings. However, asphalt-based coatings contain little amounts of rubber for sound-insulation purposes. The process of applying this coating is a bit time-consuming though.

Polyurethane underbody coating

This coating closes up splits and fractures on the underbody of the vehicle. It offers up good protection against corrosion and also bonds with the metal. Unlike in the case of asphalt-based coating, you can paint over the polyurethane coating.

ADVANTAGES OF UNDERBODY COATING

  • Protection from rust:It is very handy in protecting the underbody from rsuitng and keeping the rust at bay.It will be very handful if you live near sea side or snowy areas where the rusting intensity will be very high because of the high humidity of the atmoshere.
  • Absorbs noise:As it is mostly made of rubber it absorbs noises that comes from outside before reaching the passenger cavity. Thus shieliding the occupants from the road noises.
  • Reinforcement:Providing additional material on the stock material will act as a further reinforcement to the underbody
  • Prolong's car life:Good undercoating not only defends the underbody from corrosion but also protects the engine and transmission as well! Less rusting coupled with slower wear and tear can surely add years to the lifespan of your vehicle. There would be fewer dents, dings and scratches on the undercarriage for you to fret about.

DISADVANTAGES OF UNDERBODY COATING

  • It works only with those new cars because in the older cars there might be rust happened already which must be taken care of first before the coating can be done
  • It is pretty costly considerably to other works that are being carried out on the automobile
  • It can be neglected but with the increase in weight there will be a decrease in mileage
  • It must be replaced in specific time intervals because it has warranty time periods upto which it will last
