Underbody Coating
1. Write a one-pager about Under-Body Coating and its purpose, its types in detail, and its pros and cons.
Under-Body Coating:-
Underbody coating is usually a dense cladding (often based on rubber) applied uniformly to the undercarriage of the automobile. It is normally sprayed or painted on when the car is just out of the dealership and is clean. But even if you are getting the undercoating applied after a couple of years, it’s fine too. This is because it can prevent further damage to the undercarriage
Purpose:-
The main purpose of undercoating is to check rust, especially in the body components like frame rails along with other exposed metal parts. Underbody coating can also reduce wear and tear.
Following are the various kinds of automotive underbody coating available in the market:-
1. Rubberized Underbody Coating:-
This is generally thought of as the best underbody coating for your car. It preserves the underbody well, protecting it from scratches. Applying this to the undercarriage is not much of a hassle either.
In addition to your undercarriage, rubberized undercoating is also safe to use on wheel wells and quarter panels, and dries to a soft rubbery finish that prevents further rust, damage, or moisture seeps. The coating can be painted over and, if necessary for bodywork, can be easily removed with an undercoating removal spray.
2. Wax-based underbody Coating:-
A paraffin-based undercoating will be the cheapest and quickest option available with which to protect the undercarriage of your vehicle. However, keep in mind that it will wear off quicker than other types of undercoating and will need to be stripped and reapplied at least once every year.
Wax-based undercoatings never truly harden. During application, they drip or flow into seams and cracks to provide protective properties. They are usually available in a spray gun canister or in an aerosol can and offer at least a base protection in moderately humid climates.
This – more or less – ephemeral undercoating will wear away in a few months’ time. On the upside, wax-based undercoating puts up a big fight against moisture. It is also the most affordable option out there.
3. Asphalt-based Automotive Underbody Coating:-
Best suited for lorries, trucks, and large vehicles this provides a greater degree of protection compared to rubber-based coatings. However, asphalt-based coatings contain little amounts of rubber for sound-insulation purposes. The process of applying this coating is a bit time-consuming though. Generally sold in five-gallon containers, this type of undercoating also needs more cure time than the other three, and is NOT paintable, making it best to use only for undercarriages.
4. Polyurethane Underbody Coating:-
This coating closes up splits and fractures on the underbody of the vehicle. It offers up good protection against corrosion and also bonds with the metal. Unlike in the case of asphalt-based coating, you can paint over the polyurethane coating.
The other option for undercoating your vehicle is to use a polyurethane-based sealant. This type of vehicle undercoating is a little bit quicker and easier to apply.
Oftentimes, polyurethane undercoating will come in canisters ready to preload into an application gun. This type of sealant works by seeping into all cracks and seams, displacing salt and moisture, and oozing around rusty areas to bond with and protect the unoxidized metal. It also sands quickly in case you'll need to perform bodywork and can be painted over.
On the flip side, this type of car undercoating generally requires a little bit more surface prep work before applying -- sanding and applying an etching primer to bare metals before using are generally recommended.
In Indian road conditions, a car's underbody is most prone to corrosion. Underbody coating provides long-term protection from corrosion to the car’s underbody. It also protects parts like internal body panels, frame rails, and other inner cavities that are not physically accessible but are prone to corrosion.
Prose:-
1. Protection against Rust and corrosion: It plays an important role in keeping corrosion at bay. Underbody coating can come in handy especially if you live near the sea, where there is too much humidity, and rusting is just one of those everyday things. You should also seriously consider undercoating if you reside in a place where it snows in winter.
2. Minimizes Sound: It minimizes the sound from underneath the car resulting in a noiseless, smooth driving experience.
3. Heat Insulation: It insulates the interior of the car from extreme temperatures beneath the vehicle providing a comfortable cabin experience.
4. Anti-chipping property: If any stone hits the coating it does not get chipped away hence protecting the underbody from exposure to water.
5. Prolong Car's Life: Good undercoating not only defends the underbody from corrosion but also protects the engine and transmission as well! Less rusting coupled with slower wear and tear can surely add years to the lifespan of your vehicle. There would be fewer dents, dings, and scratches on the undercarriage for you to fret about.
Cones:-
1. High cost:-
The cost of underbody coating has come down but is still expensive. This is because underbody coating offered by a car dealer is one way in which they make money off the customer.
2. Risk of damage during application:-
Care must be taken while applying underbody coating. This thick rubberized paint if not applied properly, can get into moving mechanical parts and cause premature failure-such as into the U-joint or CV joints in a car's propeller shaft or drive shafts. They can also hinder the smooth movement of suspension components if applied incorrectly. And there's also the risk of overspray on the car's paint finish on the lower edges of the car.
3. Increase the overall weight of the Vehicle:-
Usually, the Density of the coating material is high so that it will provide protection covering beneath the car body. Also, the surface area of the underbody of the vehicle is uneven and large therefore it requires a large amount of coating material. Therefore the overall weight of the vehicle increased by kilos. Also, we know that, as the weight increases the efficiency and performance of the vehicle decreases.
