Hood design-Week 2

A Report on designing a HOOD assembly using NX CAD

Objective : To design the SHEET METAL HOOD according to the given master section.

Introduction : A car hood, also referred to as a bonnet, it is the hinged cover that rests over the engine of a front-engine vehicle. Its purpose is to provide access to the engine for repair and maintenance.

The HOOD ASSEMBLY is designed by considering the following parameters

1.Master section

2.Hemming Data

3.Rear section Relief

4.Front section Relief

Design :

Surface of the hood outer panel is provided as shown above.

First hood inner panel is designed.

HOOD INNER PANEL :

With the given master section the Hood inner panel is designed,

The Hood inner panel design has features in it like Fillets, Embosses, Cut outs

Embosses are done on the sheet metal is to strengthen the part, to withstand the forces acting on it like when a crash occures from the front end it should protect the people inside the vehicle, the Cut outs are made on the part to decrease the weight of the part without compromising the strengt factor.

Hood Outer Panel

Since the hood Inner panel is attached with the Hood outer panel, there will be hemming done on the hood outer panel in order to fix the inner panel of hood.

Hinge Assembly

Hinges are used to join two parts together while allowing them to rotate relative to each other. They typically have two flat faces, known as leaves. One leaf is attached to each of the parts being joined.

One leaf of hinge is attached to the engine support Frame and other to the Hood inner panel for the opeaning and closing movement of the hood.

Striker :

Striker is assembled to the Hood inner panel, It is used to lock the the Hood in the closed position with a lock mechanism.

All these parts are assembled together

Final Assembly

Conclusion :

Hence the Hood Assembly is designed using NX CAD by considering the design standards.
