Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
Fender Design - Wheel Arch
AIM
To decide whether the given design psses the european standards or not.

Given Design
EUROPEAN REGULATION REQUIREMENT:
- Take the outlineof the wheel and the fender .
- Make the centre of the wheel cirlce.
- Draw the horizontal and vertical perpendicular axes from the centre of the wheel circle.
- Draw lines at 30 degress and 50 degress from the centre.
- Make a point on the fender line at 150mmfromt the horizontal.
- Extend a line to this point from the centre.
- Then maake a line that is excatly between the 50 degress line and the line made on the 150mm point.
- Masure the distance between the points on the wheel circle and the fender curve. All of these should be greater than 10mm to satisfy the European regs.
- Secondly, the horizontal disntacnes SA, SB and SC points to the fender curve should be at least 5mm.
- Chech whether the design passes these conditions and conclude whether it can pass the European Regulation requirement.

DESIGN

Horizontal and vertical lines are drawn (SA,SB,SC,SD,SE).
Now let us measure the distances between the points at 5 sections
SA-SA
25.406mm>10mm

SB-SB
42.411mm>10mm

SC-SC
38.647>10mm

SD-SD
43.962mm>10mm

SE-SE
48.188mm>10mm

Now to find the horizontal distance between the wheel and the fender. This distance should be atleast 5mm from SA point, SB point and Sc point.
Distance between SA point and the fender outer curve is 9.49mm.

Distance between SB point and the fender outer curve is 10mm.

Distance between SC point and the fender outer curve is 0.114mm.

TABLE
| DISTANCE | RESULT | |
|
SA-SA |
25.406>10 | PASS |
| SB-SB | 42.411>10 | PASS |
| SC-SC | 38.647>10 |
PASS |
| SD-SD | 43.962>10 | PASS |
| SE-SE | 48.188>10 | PASS |
| FROM OUTER CURVE OF FENDER TO; | DISTANCE | RESULT |
| SA | 9.9459>5 |
PASS |
| SB | 10>5 |
PASS |
| SC | 0.114<5 |
FAIL |
CONCLUSION
The given design satisfies all European standards but one .i.e. the distance from SC points to the fender curve .Therefore this fender cannot pass the European standards. The design should be reverted back to the class A designer telling him to modify the design and increase the gap there.
