Challenge

Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

AIM : Calculate the Wheel Arch gap at required points and check whether the car passes the European standard.

Objective:

  • Create the intersection point according to given degree angle.
  • Follow the European standards to prove the design is valid.
  • Tabulate the result to conculde the final result.

INTRODUCTION :

Wheel Arch is the semi-circular part of the fender positioned above the wheel of the vehicle. The design of the wheel arch of the fender should be such that it must shield wheels and protect both passengers compartment and pedestarians from the projection of watr, mud and stones. The wheel arch area of the fender is usually designed as a cover or shield over the tyre along its perimeter to stop any debris or stones ,dirt, sand, snow, etc, from getting thrown into the vehicle or the BIW area as well as outside the vehicle and onto other vehicles or pedestarians on the road. For the vehicle to has its permit in different countries, the wheel arch of fenders must be compliant with the standards and regulations set by respective countries.

EUROPEAN REGULATION :

The European regulations requires a pre-determined clearance or a minimum distance of 10mm to be maintained between the fender and respective tyre at particular points, along the tyre profile.

At all five sections (SB,SA,SC,SD,SE) the CL L value should be greater than 10mm to satisfy the European regulations.

PROCEDURE :

  1. To start the test, first create a plane with origin as center of the wheel plane.
  2. Then sketch using lines along with given dimensions as SA, SB, SC, SD and SE.
  3. After sketching project the intersection points on to the fender face.
  4. Then use measure distance tool and calculate the clearance between sketch lines and wheel arc.

SA

The clearance between SA line and wheel arc is -9.9490mm also the line SA lies outside the fender so it is negative value.

SB

The clearance between SB line and wheel arc is 10mm also the line SB lies inside the fender so it is positive value.

SC

The clearance between SC line and wheel arc is -0.113949mm also the line SC lies outside the fender so it is negative value.

SD

The clearance between SD line and wheel arc is -2.7934mm also the line SD lies outside the fender so it is negative value.

SE

The clearance between SE line and wheel arc is -5.7387 mm also the line SE lies outside the fender so it is negative value.

MEASUREMENT TABLE :

Position Required Clearance Value (mm)Observed Clearance Value (mm) The requirement Test
SA 10 9.9490 Failed
SB 10 10 Passed
SC 10 0.1139 Failed
SD 10 2.7934 Failed
SE 10 -5.7387 Failed

CONCLUSION: From the above results we can conclude that the fender does not pass the European regulations, as the minimum clearance L between the fender wheel arch and wheel for vehicle and pedestrian safety is 10mm and this design does not meet the requirement.
