Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
1. AIM :
FENDER DESIGN - WHEEL ARCH CALCULATION
2. OBJECTIVE :
The main objective of the wheel arch challenge is to calculate the wheel arch area and prove whether the given fender of car will pass european standard or not.
3. BODY OF THE CONTENT :
Wheel arch is the semi circular part of the fender positioned above the wheel of vehicle. The design of wheel arch of fender should be such that it must shield wheels and protect both passengers and pedestrains from projection of water mud, stone. For the vehicle to has its use permit in different countries, the wheel arch of fender must be complain with the standards and regulation set by respective countries. Design satisfies based on government of their particular country also depend on the speed of vehicle.

Types of Wheel Guard Regulation Requirements :
1.European Regulation Requirement
- Measure CL L at sections SA-SA SB-SB SC-SC SD-SD SE-SE and produce CL check chart to validate.
- At all five sections the CL L value should be greater than 10mm to satisfy the European regulations.
- Wheel guard regmt: The value of 'a' shall be more than 5 mm at a line 30* forward and 50* rearward from the central vertical axis of axis of wheel.

2. Japan Regulation Requirement
- Measure clearance L of tire ,hub, cap & fender in three different positions within area K and produce clearance check chart to validate.
- Clearance must be greater than 5 mm in all the three positions.
- Wheel guard regmt: The value of 'a' shall be more than 5mm at a line 30* forward and 50* rearward from the central vertical axis of axis of wheel.

3. US Regulation Requirement
- Make clearance check details on all positions from -100* to 100* and make the clearance check table.
- All values should be greater than 5 mm to satisfy the regulations.
- The value of 'a' shall be more than 5 mm at a line 30* forward and 50* rearward from the central vertical axis of axis of wheel.

- 0btain the value of Clearence " L" :

All five sections the value of 'L' greater than 10mm to satisfy the European regulations.
| Section | Required Clearance | Actual Clearance | Result |
| SA | 10.0 mm | 9.9490 mm | FAIL |
| SB | 10.0 mm | 10.0 mm | PASS |
| SC | 10.0 mm | 0.1139 mm | FAIL |
| SD | 10.0 mm | 2.8875 mm | FAIL |
| SE | 10.0 mm | 5.9973 mm | FAIL |
- 0btain the value of Clearence " a" for Wheel Guard Requirement :

The value of 'a' more than 5 mm at a line 30* forward and 50* rearward from the central vertical axis of wheel.
| Section | Clearance | Result |
| SB | 44.7724mm >5 mm | PASS |
| SC | 38.3599mm >5 mm | PASS |
4. CONCLUSION :
From the above measurements it was observed that the clearance value '" at sections SA,SC,SD € SE was lower than 10mm and therefore it does not satisfy the European regulations. Whereas, the clearance value 'a' was more than 5mm at a line 30* forward and 50* rearward from the central vertical axis of wheel.
