Fender Design Challenge

Aim:-The proposed of this project is to create the Drip area as per the given data and also sill,Bumper, Baffle(splash) and a pillar mount area of fender according to a standard Engineering Dimension .

Theory :-

Fender :-

  • It is a part of the vehicle Body that cover the wheel as well as wheel well.
  • It's primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud,Rocks,Liquids and other Road spray for being thrown into the air by the Rotating tire.
  • When vehicle is moving ,Tires pick up stones and other and hurl them in all Direction.
  • It also prevent any injuries to pedestrains when motion of these particles(mud,Rocks etc).
  • These fenders will have a plastic part which lies on wheel arch area.
  • The fender play a major role to avoid problems for pedestrian also.Fender are typically rigid and can be damaged by contact with the road surface.

Types Of Fender :-

  • Full Bumper Type
  • Half Bumper Type

Full Bumper Type Fender :-

  • The full bumper type is the traditional type of fender where more material consumption is observed.
  • it covers the full area until the front lighting.
  • This type is used in the old designs of automobiles where it increases the overall weight and thus reduces performance.
  • The maintenance also relatively more due to more surface area so that this type of fenders are no longer used in automobiles.

Half Bumper Type :-

  • Half bumper type is the modern design where less material consumption is observed, so productivity increases by reducing the size of the blank and thus providing more performance.
  • The maintenance also low as compared to the full bumper type.

Let's Know What are the design Consideration for Making Fender :-

  • The major design consideration for making a fender is Drip area and Wheel Arch area.
  • We Should know all the dimension for making the drip area part of the fender before making the fender.

These are the Mounting Area to be consider For making a fender :-

Drip Area :-

  • This is the Blueprint/Master plan for Designing of the Drip area of the fender

  • It is the area through which the Fender is attached to engine housing through fasteners. There should be some desgin consideration followed to design the drip area, from back side of the fender there should be 200mm clearence for cowl mounting area and from the front there should be 150mm clearence for the head lamp housing unit.

  • Considering the above design constrains we have to design the drip area.

  • Embosses are provided to increase strength, corners of the flanges are smoothen to ease of the production. Uniform wall thickness of 0.75mm.

  • Initially 3-degree angle and 9mm length is given while creating a drip area because the engine component should not be visible from outside.
  • The depth of the drift should be less than 40 mm. If the depth exceeds from 40mm then forming is not feasible due to spring back and wrinkles.
  • Embosses and ribs are given to drip area to give strength.

A PILLAR MOUNT AREA :-

  • A pillar is a region where the A-pillar of the car is mounted from the front fender.
  • It is located at the top right corner of the fender.
  • A Piller is on the cars either side of the front windshield which is the reason the windshield in the place.
  • It is Mounted on the A Pillar by means of fasteners and these are covered by outer side view mirrors.
  • Here, the proper embossing are provided along with holes for fasteners.

SILL MOUNT AREA :-

  • The Sill Mounting area is in the bottom of the fender.
  • Sill plates are essentially placed in cars to protect the door frames from wear and tear.
  • It is mostely gets connected with the door region of the car.
  • Here, proper embossing and holes for the fasteners are provided.
  • The ribs are provided to improve the strength.

BUMPER MOUNT AREA :-

  • In this Mounting area , the Fender is connects with the bumper.
  • The Bumper Mounting region must be rigid in order to withstand the force acting upon it during collision. So, the Mounting space can be larger

BAFFELE/SPLASH MOUNT AREA:-

  • In order to stop all the debris entering into the engine room and other components splash protector mountings is been introduced.
  • It just reqiure a area to hold the splash protector, so holes or slots are provided as per requirement.

Conclusion :-

  • The front fender is Designed from the given skin data and the master section provided with Drip mounting, A-pillar, Sill, Bumper and Baffle mountings Area using NX as CAD tool.
