Design of backdoor

AIM:- Design a Back door of the car using a Class A surface.

INTRODUCTION:-

A Door is a hinged part that is used for entry and exit of the vehicles. A backdoor is one of the types of doors of the vehicle which is located next to the passenger seat and provides access to the luggage compartment. In most cars, these back doors are operated with the help of gas stay which in turn reduces the effort required to lift the door. Some luxury cars have a powered backdoor which in turn is driven by an electric motor. This kind of system is also called a powered trunk lid system hatchback or station wagons are sold as 3 doors or 5 doors models. In this case, the rear hatch is classified as a door this is because it enters the passenger compartment. The naming is mainly used in European countries. In the case of safety, the backdoor design should meet the safety requirement of the rear collision.

Back door assembly has the following components:-

  • Inner panel
  • Outer panel upper
  • Outer panel lower
  • Wiper motor attachment
  • Latch and sticker reinforcement
  • Gas stay reinforcement
  • Hinge reinforcement

Design of Inner panel

  • An inner panel is a component that strengthens the back door assembly and it is one of the important parts where the wiper motor, latch &striker, Gas stay, and hinge reinforcement are attached.
  • First, all the surface is joined and offsetting the Class A surface as per the master section. Then emboss is created to strengthen the inner pane during the collision of the car.

Design of outer panel

  • The outer panel is similar to the BIW sheet metal component. It consists of Hemming so that it can be joined to the inner panel. In outer panel is attached with a tale lamp, rear fog lamp, and provision of license plate mounting.

Design of reinforcement:-

Hinges support the weight of the whole backdoor. Hence reinforcement is provided here too. Emboss is designed such that the hinges should be operated freely. The electrical wiring looms are through the holes along the periphery to keep them hidden. The different types of reinforcement used in back door are:-

  • Wiper motor attachment
  • Latch and sticker reinforcement
  • Gas stay reinforcement
  • Hinge reinforcement

For positioning the Latch & Stricker, we have to create a trajectory passing through a midpoint of line/ axis of two hinge mounting holes.
