Design of backdoor
Backdoor Design Challenge
Aim of the project: To design backdoor in automotive sheet metal designing using surface designing of NX CAD.
Introduction: Backdoor are one of the type of door of the vehicle which are located next to the passenger seat which provides access to the luggage compartment. In the most of the cars, these back doors are operated with the help of gas stay which in turn reduces the effort required to lift the door. This is designed with the help of given master sections.

There are various components in designing and strengthening back door as well as mountings are provided to increase the strength and finally everything is assembled in a proper manner.
Design methodology and requirements:
The design of backdoor is done with the help of sheet metal or surface designing in NX CAD with the top down approach .
Design methodology:
- Assembly file is created
- New part files are created in assembly file with different names
- The editing and designing of separate parts are done by going to that particular part.
- Hemming of outer panel done
Parts and components involved in Back door designing:
- Back door outer panel lower
- Back door outer panel upper
- Back door inner panel
- Hinge Reinforcement
- Gas Stay Reinforcement
- Latch Reinforcement
- Wiper motor Reinforcement
Back door outer panel: This is the outer part of backdoor and it provides strength to inner part. For designing this, the given skin data is taken and then through various commands a proper surface is created followed by hemming and then it is thickened to 0.75mm
Commands used:
- Offset surface
- Bridge curve
- Trim sheet
- Bridge curve
- Swept
- Sew
- Mirror geometry
- Thicken

Back door inner panel:
Backdoor inner panel is an extra support to back door and both the outer and inner panel are attached, the surface of inner panel lies inside outer panel and then a proper hemming between the two are done. In designing of backdoor there are various components such as Connecting flange, Sealing Flange, Tooling direction, Connecting Blends, Windshield.
Commands used:
- Offset surface
- Project curve
- Edge blend
- Face blend
- Offset curve in face
- Trim sheet
- Law extension
- Trim and extend
- Intersection curve
- Sew
- Mirror Geometry
- Thicken

Inner Panel:

Hinge Reinforcement: Hinge reinforcement, for a motor vehicle door hinge, has a shape corresponding to the shape of the hinge bracket and is able to be joined to the hinge bracket. It is joint given to hinge the surface in open condition.
This feature is designed using linked face and then apply thickening to the offset surface created

Gas Stay Reinforcement: Gas stay are used to provide support to the backdoor while in open condition. This feature is designed with the help of linked geometry.

Latch Reinforcement

Wiper motor Reinforcement

Hemming: Hemming is an operation in sheet metal designing with help of which the inner panel and outer panel are connected by providing an extra support and strengthening the part. This operation is done by creating the offset surface and then trimming it with help of offset curve in face feature and finally the surfaces are joined with help of Swept.

Final Assembly of Backdoor:

Conclusion: This project helped in understanding about backdoor, solving complicated errors and learning the surface designing of NX CAD.
