Design of backdoor
BACK DOOR:
The backdoor is a part of an automobile which is used as a protection for the boot space area and also in some vehicles it is used for the entry and exit into the vehicle.
The opening and closing of backdoor is operated by Gas stay or Power Spindles (Automatic opening and closing of backdoor).
BACKDOOR WITH GAS STAY:

BACKDOOR WITH POWER SPINDLE:

The backdoor can be mounted in different ways.
1. TOP MOUNTING / TOP OPENING:

2. SIDE MOUNTING / SIDE OPENING:

In the above Assignment we need to design the different parts of a backdoor as listed below and define the position of Hinge, Gas stay and Latch n Striker and create different emboss for the mounting of the parts
DIFFERENT PARTS OF BACKDOOR:
1. Outer Panel Upper
2. Outer Panel Lower
3. Inner Panel
4. Hinge Reinforcements
5. Gas stay / Power spindle Reinforcements
6. Latch n Striker Reinforcement
7. Wiper Motor Reinforcement
IMPORTANT DESIGN PARAMETERS:
1. The Outer panel consists of two parts Outer panel upper and Outer panel lower.
2. Outer panel upper and Outer panel lower are to be manufactured separately so these two parts are to be de designed as two different parts.
3. Both the parts are to be hemmed with the Inner panel separately and the Outer panel upper and the Outer panel lower are joined by spot welding.
4. First we need to design a Sealing flange in which the rubber will fit.
5. We need to design different embosses for the Hinge, Gas stay, Latch n striker and Wiper motor mountings.
6. We have to design a flange like structure to join the Inner panel and Outer panel of backdoor.
7. The main concern is to dissipate the energy that occurs due to Overslamming, Abusing or Rear collision outside the car.
8. Here the force acts perpendicular to the backdoor so the cutots must be designed in such a way that it dissipates the force outside the car.
9. As the force is moved outside the car to the side panels or the area where the Gas stay and Hinge mountings are present so these areas becomes the weakest region so we need to provide Reinforcements in these parts.
10. During closing the door or Rear collision there is also force acting on the Latch n striker so Reinforcements are also given in this area.
11. The distance between the Hinge point and the Gas stay body side mounting cannot be more than 90mm and cannot be less than 60mm and the angle between them is to be 80 to 90.
12. These values depends on the Type of Gas stay, Weight of the backdoor, Kinematics it follows for opening and closing.
13.The values are calculated by the force needed for the Gas stay to exert and keep the backdoor in open and close condition.
14. The position of the Hinges and Gas stay and Latch n Striker are all co-related. If we change the position of any of the one part then we have to change the position of all the parts to satisfy the kinematics they follow to open and close the backdoor.
15. The reinforcements are given in order to compensate the strength that is lost.
DESIGN OF DIFFERENT PARTS:
1. TOOLING DIRECTION :

2. INNER PANEL :

3. GAS STAY POSITION AND REINFORCEMENT:

4. HINGE POSITION AND REINFORCEMENT :

5. LATCH N STRIKER POSITION AND REINFORCEMENT:

6. WIPER MOTOR POSITION AND REINFORCEMENT :

7. JOINING BETWEEN INNER PANEL AND OUTER PANEL:

8. OUTER PANEL UPPER :

9. OUTER PANEL LOWER :

DIFFERENT REINFORCEMENTS :

10. HEMMING :
HEMMING IN OUTER PANEL UPPER

HEMMING IN OUTER PANEL LOWER

11. SPOT WELDING BETWEEN OUTER PANEL UPPER AND LOWER :

FINAL ASSEMBLY :

CONCLUSION :
The backdoor of a car with different parts and features including Inner panel, Outer panel upper and Lower and different Reinforcements are created and also the the joining techniques like hemming is also performed in the Outer panels using NX CAD.
