Explain Bench-Marking.
Bench-Marking in the automotive industry invloves sturcutral comparison between similar products, services or process on some dimensions of performance. Benchmarking is a process of comparing business process and performance metrics to the industry best and best practices from other industries. Dimensions typically measured are quality, time and cost. Benchmarking is used to measure performance on the specific indicator (cost per unit of measure, productivity per unit of measure, cycle time of x per unit of measure or defects per unit of measure) resulting in metric of performance that is then compared to others.
Process benchmarking of this kind can operate at several levels:
- Between similar processes in the same factory or service branch
- Between different factories or service branches
- Between different competing organizations
- Between different sectors using the same processes
There is no single Benchmarking processes that has been universally adopted. The wide appeal and acceptance of benchmarking has led to the emergence of benchmarking methodologies. The most commonly developed 12- stage approach to the benchmarking is as follows:
- Select subject
- Define the process
- Identify the potential partners
- Identify data sources
- Collect data and select all partners
- Determine the gap
- Establish process differences
- Target future performance
- Communicate
- Adjust goal
- Implement
- Review and recalibrate
