What are the proper steps to learn CFD?

logo

Skill-Lync

The proper way to learn any mechanical engineering course is to select the field you would like to specialise in CFD is a vast sector. Before learning CFD, choose which field you would prefer to concentrate on in CFD:

CFD is the study of flow dynamics in mechanical systems. Depending on where the flow is happening, it can be classified as external flow dynamics and internal flow dynamics. In internal flow dynamics, you simulate and study the effects of flow inside a mechanical system like IC engines, HVAC systems, and turbomachinery. In external flow dynamics, you study the flow dynamics over a system. For example, the aerodynamic flow over a racing car.

Once you have chosen the field to master in, you must familiarise in the basic of flow physics and mathematics. But your major focus must be on learning the subject practically. Like Benjamin Franklin remarked,

‘Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn’

Learning CFD is not a simple task. It is important that you understand the basics thoroughly and it is not viable to achieve that without help.  At Skill-Lync, we offer a special tailor-made course for each of the areas mentioned above. The best part of that is, you learn every concept pragmatically:

CFD courses for Internal flows:

Advanced CFD for IC engines:

In this course, you will learn how to set up a CFD simulation using Converge CFD for IC engines. You will:

  • Simulate flow over a throttle body under steady and transient conditions.
  • Run closed cycle simulations of a CAT3410 engine using two different piston bowls.
  • Run several simulations of physical models like spray, turbulence, combustions, and emission in parallel.

Computational combustion using Python and Cantera:

In this course, you will be taught to write programs related to chemical kinetics in python and then stimulate combustion systems using the written programs in Cantera. By the end of this course, you will be well equipped to stimulate complex 3D combustion.

Advanced Turbomachinery Simulations:

A turbomachine is a machine that transfers energy between a rotor and a fluid. In this course, you will learn to perform turbomachinery simulations by using CONVERGE CFD. While turbomachines have many classifications, we will focus mainly on centrifugal pumps and superchargers.

As a part of this course, you will be working on 2 projects:

  • You will simulate flow through a centrifugal pump to determine the pump performance curve.
  • You will simulate flow through a supercharger and analyze it to compute the mass flow rate and outlet temperatures accurately.

HVAC system flow analysis:

In this course, you will learn to simulate and analyze the airflow in HVAC systems. This area includes subjects like thermal management, heat transfer etc. In this course, you will:

  • Simulate flow through a centrifugal pump to determine the pump performance curve.
  • Simulate flow through a model data center to determine the airflow pattern and recognize the potential hot spot regions.
  • Stimulate a shell and tube heat exchanger to understand the effectiveness of these heat exchangers and how much pressure drops in a heat exchanger.

Advanced Aerodynamic Simulation:

In this course, you will learn to perform aerodynamic simulations by using CONVERGE CFD. In this course, you will be focusing on topics like physical modelling, combustion modelling, and emissions modelling. An engineer must be proficient in these topics to set up an external flow simulation correctly.

As a part of this course, you will be working on 4 projects:

  • Perform a steady and transient simulation of flow over a throttle body to understand the basics of CFD and Converge.
  • Simulate a flow over an Ahmed body vehicle and compare your simulation data to experimental data from other sources.
  • Perform external aero analysis on a GCM truck
  • Learn and perform a case study on the aerodynamics of an FSAE car.

Apart from these courses, we also offer CFD courses on setting up simulations using software like ANSYS, MATLAB, SolidWorks etc.

Advanced CFD using ANSYS fluent:

In this course, you will simulate basic compressible flow, basic incompressible, fuel sprays, solid-state heat transfer, two-phase flow simulations using ANSYS Fluent.

Introduction to CFD using MATLAB and OpenFoam:

This course is designed to help you set up CFD simulations in MATLAB and OpenFOAM. In this course, you will be using the following software: MATLAB, OpenFOAM and Linux.

Flow simulation using SolidWorks:

In this course, you will learn how to simulate flow using SolidWorks to study the effects of flow over various geometrical shapes. You will design and simulate flow over various systems to understand the concepts of CFD practically.
