In today's digital world, it is an understatement to say that data is collected about almost anything and everything.   • Google processes over 20 petabytes of data per day
    • Wondering What a Petabyte is?
      • A petabyte is a unit of information or computer storage equal to one quadrillion (1,000,000,000,000,000) bytes.
      • A petabyte is also equal to 1,024 terabytes or 1,048,576 gigabytes.
  • That’s over 2 million GB per minute!
  • Google has over 60,000 servers in over 25 countries
  • They handle over 3 billion requests a day

How Does Google Handle Data?

Google processes over 20 petabytes of data every day. This data comes from a variety of sources, including:

  • Web searches
  • YouTube videos
  • Gmail messages
  • Google Maps requests

To handle this vast amount of data, Google has built one of the most powerful and scalable infrastructures on the planet to support its massive user base. They have invested 100s of billions of dollars in building out their infrastructure so that they can provide a fast and reliable experience for their users. This infrastructure includes:

  • A global network of data centers
  • Customized server hardware

All data is encrypted both at rest and in transit. Google also uses extensive monitoring and logging to detect any suspicious activity or attempts to gain unauthorised access to user data.   • Storing all of the data

      • Google has to deal with over 4,000 petabytes of data coming in or being moved on a daily basis. That’s a lot of data! 
  • Processing all of that data

      • Google has developed sophisticated algorithms and systems to help them process all that data quickly and efficiently.
  • Dealing with the sheer volume of Big data

    • It can be difficult to sift through the data and find the information you’re looking for. And, as more and more data is produced, this problem will only worsen. 
  • Ensure the accuracy and quality of data

    • With so much data, it’s easy for errors to creep in.

Despite these challenges, Google has been very successful in dealing with large volumes of data. They have developed some innovative solutions that have allowed them to effectively store, process, and use big data to their advantage.
