India's medical and healthcare industry is rapidly advancing, driven by technological advancements and increasing demand for quality care. This has paved the way for a new breed of professionals - Biomedical Engineers. They are responsible for developing new instruments and technologies to diagnose, treat, and prevent diseases. In this article, we look at the bright future of biomedical engineering in India and explore the lucrative roles available in this domain.
Biomedical engineering is a field that deals with designing and developing medical devices and systems. It is a relatively new field that has emerged from the convergence of engineering and medicine.
In India, biomedical engineering is still growing, but it holds much promise for the future. The reasons for this include:
Graduates from this subject may work in various settings, including research facilities, hospitals, laboratories, the healthcare industry, or even the production of goods. Pharmaceutical firms and government organisations hire these professionals to develop devices that can aid practitioners and patients. A report indicates that, compared to other engineering specialities, the employment rate for biomedical engineers is anticipated to increase by 10% between 2023 and 2035.
It is no secret that biomedical engineering is one of India's most rapidly growing and promising industries. With the ever-increasing demand for better healthcare and medical technologies, there is a constant need for highly skilled and qualified biomedical engineers.
In addition to developing new medical technologies, biomedical engineers are also responsible for maintaining and troubleshooting existing medical equipment. They may also be involved in conducting research to develop new treatments for various diseases and disorders.
The opportunities for growth and advancement in biomedical engineering are virtually limitless. Biomedical engineers who wish to pursue a career in this field can find ample opportunities in both the public and private sectors.
The Indian Government has made efforts to boost the growth of biomedical engineering in the country. It has set up several initiatives, both at the policy and implementation levels, to create a conducive environment for the development of this sector.
The government has released a National Biomedical Engineering Policy document which outlines the vision and mission for developing the Biomedical sector in India. According to the policy, world-class facilities were set up for research and innovation in the med tech industry and harness the strengths of traditional knowledge systems to develop indigenous solutions. The policy also aims to create a skilled biomedical engineering workforce and promote entrepreneurship in this sector.
The government has launched various programmes to support the growth of biomedical engineering in India. The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) has set up two centres of excellence in biomedical engineering, one at IIT Delhi and one at IIT Madras. These centres will be engaged in cutting-edge research in areas such as tissue regeneration, nanomedicine, medical devices etc. The DBT also supports several academic institutes and research organisations working in this area through its Biotechnology Industry Partnership Programme (BIPPP).
Other initiatives include setting up a National Mission on Biomedical Engineering under the Department of Science & Technology (DST), the establishment of fellowships for doctoral & post-doctoral.
Conclusion
India is one of the countries spearheading the biomedical engineering field. Its highly skilled workforce, excellent research facilities, and growing healthcare sector present great opportunities for students and professionals alike to make an impact in this field. The country's commitment to developing state-of-the-art medical technology reflects its progressive nature and willingness to embrace the latest trends in medical science.
