TOOLING AXIS

MAIN TOOLING AXIS CREATION:

The Tooling Axis is central to performing a draft analysis.

  • Direction of Draft: The Tooling Axis determines the direction in which the mold will open and the part will be ejected. The draft analysis tool evaluates the angle of each face relative to this axis. Without a defined Tooling Axis, the software cannot accurately perform draft analysis, as it would lack a consistent reference direction for the part.

  • Choosing the Correct Tooling Axis: The Tooling Axis must be aligned with the part’s functional needs.

For example:

Injection Molding: If a part is to be injection molded, the Tooling Axis typically aligns with the parting line of the mold, which is the plane along which the mold opens.

Casting: For casting processes, the Tooling Axis may be oriented to the direction in which the molten material flows into the mold.

STEP BY STEP CREATE THE TOOLING AXIS :

  • Extract the bottom of the class A surface.
  • Create the point by using On surface based point creation.
  • After that create the line in Z direction by using Normal to surface line type method.

DRAFT ANALYSIS:

DRAFT ANALYSIS OF CLASS A AND CLOSE SURFACE:

Draft analysis is an essential step in the design of parts intended for injection molding, die-casting, or similar manufacturing processes. It helps ensure that a part is suitable for being molded or cast without issues such as difficulty in part ejection, tool interference, or excessive wear.

  • Class A Surface: Ensure the exterior geometry is smooth and free of defects.
  • Material View Mode: Switch to this mode to see realistic material finishes and better visualize the draft angles.
  • Position the Compass: Align the compass with the Main Tooling Axis to evaluate the draft angles correctly.
  • 3-Degree Draft Angle: If the draft is within this range, CATIA will highlight the surface in green, indicating proper draft.
