Week 8 Worm Gear Challenge
Transient structural Analysis of Worm Gear
Objective
To carry out a transient structural analysis on a worm gear model and to derive the equivalent elastic strain, equivalent stress, and total deformation of the model.
Material data
Figure. 1 shows the Structural steel's properties in Ansys Workbench engineering data. It was used as the Worm Gear model's material input as per Case 1.

Connections
Figure. 3 illustrates the connections between the Worm and the Gear. The Gear faces is assigned as the ‘Contact bodies’ and the Gear faces is assigned as the ‘Target bodies’ and the contact is defined as Frictionless.

Meshing
Figure. 6 illustrates the model is Default meshed of a element size 1.5 mm with active Adaptive sizing and medium smoothing quality.

Conclusion
- The result shows high equivalent stress in the Worm and Gear contact. Similarly for deformation and strain.
- Equivalent stress and equivalent elastic strain has the minimum value in the Gear body but the minimum deformation is in the contact region of Worm and Gear.
- Total rotation of Worm is 2500 degree axis of rotation which will cover half the Gear circumference.
