Week 8 - Universal Joint
Ansys Week 8 Challenege: Universal Joint
AIM
To perform the transient structural analysis on a double universal joint using three different materials.
OBJECTIVE
To simulate the universal joints using several joints connections and evaluate the result for three different materials and then compare the results.
- Structural Steel.
- Stainless Steel.
- Titanium Alloy.
MATERIAL PROPERTIES
1) Structural Steel.

PROCEDURE
SETUP
Geometry
Importing the geometry in the SpaceClaim in the module to check whether any surface damages and possible to repair them.

Fig 4: Universal Joint Geometry
Connections
There are several contacts are set up already in the mechanical module, but they are not required for this simulation, so all contacts are deleted and then several joints are given for the simulation process.
- Fixed Joint - Ground to spring.
- Revolute Joint - Ground to Component.
- Revolute Joint 1 - Grount to universal joint 3.
- And other revolute joints - Body to Body.

Mesh
For this simulation, the mesh has been refined with the element size 2.5mm and keeping the adaptive size ON then elements and nodes are below the academic size limit.
Nodes: 25179
Elements: 12949

Analysis Settings
The analysis settings are given to the universal joint for the 5 steps selecting all 5 septs and switch off the carry-over time step with ON all the output controls.

Fig 11: Analysis settings
Giving the revolute joint load for 5 steps at 30 degrees to each and every step as calculating with the tabular data.

CONCLUSION
| Sr.No | Structural Steel | Stainless Steel | Titanium Alloy |
| Total Deformation Min (mm) | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| Total Deformation Max (mm) | 38.63 | 38.63 | 38.63 |
| Equivalent stress min (MPa) | 1.218 e-009 | 5.8826e-009 | 5.3592e-009 |
| Equivalent stress max (MPa) | 2.642 e-007 | 1590.2 | 799.95 |
The Total deformation on the universal joint is equal to all three material with a minimum value of 0mm to a maximum value of but for the equivalent von Mises stress the structural steel has the least stress on the material compare to others with the minimum value of 1.218 e-009 MPa to maximum 2.642 e-007 MPa, Stainless Stress with Equivalent value minimum value 5.8826e-009 to the maximum value of 1590.2 MPa, Titanium Alloy minimum value of 5.3592e-00 MPa to Maximum Value of 799.95 MPa.
